SUMMARY:Life Science Evolved: Teaching in the Age of NGSS (w/New Regents Labs!)
DESCRIPTION:Teaching Life Science in the Age of NGSS – w/New Regents Labs and assessment tricks for the new year!\n\n\nDates: July 15-19\, 2024 (in person) \nLed by: Chris Resch and Qiao Feng \nLocation: City College of New York \n  \nLife Science education is often associated with memorization. But does it have to be?  The Life Sciences is a subject rich in anchoring models that all tie together and build off each other and create a rich story of interactions and scale! Recent shifts in pedagogical research\, NGSS/NYS Regents standards have caused movement towards this more conceptually based approach to biology education. We want to help you move your lessons and teaching there as well! \n  \nJoin us for our upcoming workshop\, “Life Science Evolved: Teaching Life Science in the Age of NGSS.”  This workshop will explore active learning strategies for deepening your student’s understanding of these crucial conceptual models and help you effectively implement a student-centered\, NGSS and NYS Regents-aligned approach to life science education.  To do this\, we will engage with key experiments and activities that can help students build a critical understanding of these models. These experiments will include the three new Regents Biology labs: Structure and Function: Balancing Act – Exploring Feedback and Homeostasis\, Inheritance and Variation of Traits: Unraveling the Mystery of Lactose Intolerance\, and Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems: For the Birds – Designing Solutions.   \n  \nAdditionally\, participants will engage in both “student mode” and “teacher mode” so that they can experience these activities through both lenses and add practical tools to the teacher toolbox.  We will also have structured discussions about the new changes in the New York State Regents curriculum and test\, strategies for accommodating district-specific curricular requirements\, various student populations\, laboratory resources\, and the use of “Reflective Checklists” as a way of promoting student reflection throughout a unit. \n  \nWe welcome all teachers and administrators\, both new and experienced\, to join us for this engaging workshop! \n  \nCost: (Limited # of tickets!) \nEarly Bird $275 \nGeneral Admission Teacher Price $350 \nGeneral Admission School Price $500 \nSTEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching\, since 2011. As teachers experience ways to engage students in talking about scientific phenomena in a summer lab-school setting\, they gain confidence and expertise to bring new strategies into their regular classroom setting. The powerful opportunity to listen closely to student conversations around science during a 2-week summer experience\, coupled with support from teacher mentors\, and program leaders has not only demonstrated changes and growth in student classroom discourse\, but created an active\, growing professional network and expanded STEMteachersNYC’s outreach to primary-grades. \nKey components of the KT3 approach\, which continues to be offered as part of the annual STEMteachersNYC Summer STEM Institute: \n\nAlignment with individual participants’ existing approaches and curriculum.\nA focus on facilitating the use of existing pedagogical expertise to transfer instructional strategies used to teach reading and writing to grade-appropriate science discussions.\nStrategies for teaching teachers to build increasingly student-led discourse.\nTwo-week summer Lab School Model + coaching and school year reunions.\n\nThe KT3 project also aims to extend discussion practices from YOUR high confidence subjects into all classroom subjects discussed & leveraging it as common thread/cross curricular glue in ELA & NGSS classrooms. \nREACH OUT FOR INFORMATION ON BECOMING A SUMMER HOST SCHOOL! SUMMARY:Capturing Student Interest with Phenomena - 2 Part Workshop (ES)
DESCRIPTION:Leaders: Juliette Guarino Berg and Kathy Renfrew \n\n\n\nDates: February 25 and March 11\, 2023 (9:00am-12:00pm EDT\, via Zoom) \n\n\n\nAbout the Workshop \n\n\n\nNOTE – All participants will receive a materials kit in advance. \n\n\n\nPart 1: Capturing Student Interest with Phenomena \n\n\n\nWe will kick off the workshop having everyone engage in with a scientific phenomenon in student-mode. Participants will continue to work in student mode to generate noticings and wonderings as well as create models that attempt to explain what they have observed. Once participants have had the opportunity to share their models with each other\, they will develop questions about the models and determine whether those questions can be answered in the science classroom. Throughout the session\, relevant texts\, trade books\, and media will be introduced and discussed. \n\n\n\nAGENDA for Part 1 \n\n\n\n\nStudent Mode! Energy stick and tuning fork phenomena.\n\n\n\nNotice and Wonder. Draw a model – What do you think is happening?\n\n\n\nShare-out of thoughts and ideas.\n\n\n\nWhere have you seen things like this before? Whole Group Discussion and/or grade level groups.\n\n\n\nDeveloping and Asking Questions.\n\n\n\n\nPart 2: Using Texts and Other Media to Support Quality Science Instruction \n\n\n\nIn this session\, we take a dive into how science and literacy are dependent upon one another. In student mode\, participants will use the science and engineering practices in an investigation that could help to explain the observed phenomenon. After performing the investigation\, we will make a claim supported by evidence and reasoning\, as well as a second claim about how the investigation was important for understanding the phenomenon. Is this enough evidence? We will engage in discussions about how texts can be used to provide additional evidence to support our claim. Throughout the workshop\, participants will have opportunities to engage in many of the practices of scientists and engineers\, including reading\, writing\, speaking\, and listening. Many resources will be collected\, shared\, and discussed. \n\n\n\nAgenda for Part 2 \n\n\n\n\nExamining student mode questions from Part 1.\n\n\n\nInvestigation: Squishy Circuits (LEDs and Buzzers). Explain how squishy circuits demonstrates transfer of energy.\n\n\n\nWhat additional evidence do I need to support my claim? How can using text support literacy as well as using supporting science ?\n\n\n\nExpand meaning of text: photos\, maps\, diagrams\, infographic etc.\n\n\n\nAdditional for Lower Grade Band – Sound Travel Through Air\, Sound Travel Through Liquid\, Sound Travel Through Solids.\n\n\n\n\n4th grade Performance Expectations (4-PS3-2): Make observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place to place by sound\, light\, heat\, and electric currents. \n\n\n\nCrosscutting Concepts: Cause and Effect and Energy Transfer \n\n\n\nWe will also be addressing common core literacy writing\, speaking and listening and reading standards.

SUMMARY:Numbers\, Strategy\, and Computation with Mathic Games! (ES/MS)
DESCRIPTION:Reinforce math operations\, facts\, and concepts with Mathic Games! Developed by a teacher for the classroom! \n\n\n\nLeaders: Perry Clemons \n\n\n\nAbout the Workshop \n\n\n\nDEVELOPED BY A TEACHER for the CLASSROOM! Join us for a gamified workshop about Educational Math Card Games. In this workshop\, we will learn how to play the physical and virtual versions of Mathic Games. We will explore both ‘Mathic Number: The Card Game of Arithmetic’\, and ‘Mathic Fraction: The Card Game of Fractions’. Mathic Games are STEM.org Authenticated Educational Games that introduce and reinforce math operations\, facts\, and concepts. Mathic Games are very versatile math games where players compete to collect the most points by computing equations and earning tokens. These games can be used as resources to help students practice and master math\, as well as gain confidence in mathematics. Teachers can use Mathic Games with remedial and enrichment groups\, as well as during a test review. We’ll explore how the games can be used in your classrooms and in the homes of your students. There is no download necessary for this internet-based session. Learn more about Mathic Games @ www.mathicgames.com

SUMMARY:Visualizing Student Thinking with SageModeler (ES/MS)
DESCRIPTION:Diagramming and creating models are skills that allow students of all ages to illustrate their thinking and share their thinking! \n\n\n\nLeaders: Kimesha Reid-Grant and Juliette Guarino Berg \n\n\n\nClimateSTEM Series\, Focus on “Systems Thinking” . \n\n\n\nDiagramming and creating models are skills that allow students of all ages to illustrate their thinking and share their thought processes with others. In this workshop\, participants will be introduced to the diagramming and systems modeling tool SageModeler\, a “free\, web-based\, and open-source software to engage students in systems thinking through designing\, building\, and revising models.” Workshop participants will have the opportunity to explore relevant phenomena such as energy flow in ecosystems and factors contributing to the health of a body of water in “student mode\,” beginning with basic diagramming skills and working towards creating a static equilibrium model. Participants will also spend time in “teacher mode” considering ways to use SageModeler within their current scope and sequence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThree-Dimensional Next Generation Science Standards Addressed: \n\n\n\nPerformance Expectations \n\n\n\n\n\n5-PS3-1. Use models to describe that energy in animals’ food (used for body repair\, growth\, motion\, and to maintain body warmth) was once energy from the sun.\n\n\n\n\n\n5-LS2-1. Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants\, animals\, decomposers\, and the environment.\n\n\n\n\n\nMS-ESS3-3. Apply scientific principles to design a method for monitoring and minimizing a human impact on the environment.\n\n\n\n\n\nMS-ESS3-4.
