Work with over three in person workshop days\, with supportive\, experienced\, mentors and a community of colleagues\, to experience the new labs yourself! \nThis summer we held a sold-out\, one-week\, professional learning workshop focused on the new Life Science Regents Labs. Based on what we learned from our teacher-participants\, Chris Resch and a team of experienced teachers and teacher-leaders will host three in-person lab workshops\, and four virtual planning sessions over the 2024-2025 school year. \nLife Science education is often associated with memorization. But does it have to be? The Life Sciences is a subject rich in anchoring models that all tie together and build off each other and create a rich story of interactions and scale! Recent shifts in pedagogical research\, NGSS/NYS Regents standards have caused movement towards this more conceptually based approach to biology education. Use computational thinking and apply programming to real world scenarios and interdisciplinary examples from real world classrooms! Abstraction\, Logic\, Evaluation and more – the concepts and approaches of computational thinking can help students think through and tackle projects and problems\, and to work as a team and communicate solutions. Computation has become an integral part of every scientific field. Today’s scientists leverage computational tools\, use computation as a model for thinking\, conduct their investigations with computation and often must contribute to the design of the computational tools for their specific research. The NGSS emphasize the role of authentic professional practices in teaching science. Alternating between student- and teacher-mode\, we will discuss the pedagogical rationale behind each activity\, and strategies for adapting to various student populations and classroom resources. The materials and techniques in this workshop are all directly useful in the NYS Regents Physics Curriculum and in most other intro-level high school physics courses\, including the AP Physics 1 curriculum. The activities emphasize depth over breadth; as a result\, they cover many\, but not by any means all\, of the topics in the Regents Physics and most other intro curricula. \nThe workshop will focus on fundamental physics mechanics concepts including kinematics (constant velocity and uniform acceleration)\, dynamics (Newton’s Laws)\, circular motion\, and the conserved quantities momentum and energy. The models we will navigate are comprised of descriptive\, diagrammatic\, graphical\, and algebraic representations\, which are developed through observation\, experimentation\, and reflection\, and “deployed” through prediction and verification. The constructivist process we will explore encourages student teamwork and active\, productive discussion\, not just with the teacher\, but with fellow classmates. \nIf you are a pre-service physics teacher\, this workshop will help you prepare for your first year teaching an algebra-based intro physics course. Would you like to engage your students in real\, student-driven independent research projects? Engaging high school and middle school students in the authentic research process stirs their curiosity and promotes creativity\, while introducing them to how science is done. \nIn this workshop\, we will model and share resources that teach students how to develop testable research questions\, design and execute their own rigorous experiments to answer those questions\, use statistics to analyze their results and present their data. Follow-up meetups will provide a space for reflecting on- and refining- your process of turning your science classroom into a research lab! \nIn this workshop participants will put on their student-hats and dig into one or more of the follow models: \n\n*Exercise physiology (respiration rate\, lung volume\, heart rate)\,\n*Psychology (Stroop test)\,\n*Animal behavior experiments (pill bugs).\n\nAdditional time in the workshop will focus on assessing student progress in a research course. Participants will learn to scaffold each aspect of the scientific process with mini-lessons. Alternating between student- and teacher-mode\, we will discuss the pedagogical rationale behind each activity\, and strategies for adapting to various student populations and classroom resources. The materials and techniques in this workshop are all directly useful in the NYS Regents Physics Curriculum and in most other intro-level high school physics courses\, including the AP Physics 1 curriculum. The activities emphasize depth over breadth; as a result\, they cover many\, but not by any means all\, of the topics in the Regents Physics and most other intro curricula. \nThe workshop will focus on fundamental physics mechanics concepts including kinematics (constant velocity and uniform acceleration)\, dynamics (Newton’s Laws)\, circular motion\, and the conserved quantities momentum and energy. In spring\, Central Park becomes a global birding hot-spot. Thousands of colorful songbirds migrating from the tropics stop in the park each day in April\, May and early June to refuel on insects before continuing north toward their breeding grounds. Join us for a walk through the north end of the park to learn how to identify these birds—flycatchers\, warblers\, thrushes\, raptors and more—and search for rarities. Learn how to identify the birds and find out about their behavior. Bring walking footwear and binoculars and/or a camera with a good telephoto lens. Don’t be late—We will start walking at 7:45 am sharp. \nIncludes slides and other classroom-friendly resources! \n  \nCost:  $50 Stipends for first 8 teachers; free to all others (Limited # of tickets!) \nThe first eight teacher-participants to sign up will receive a stipend of $50 for this workshop! Javascript is one of the most popular programming languages today which is used for web app development and desktop and mobile applications. p5.js is a JavaScript library of “tools” designed for creative coding with easy access to graphics and animation. These capabilities make p5.js ideal for physics teachers with little or no programming experience to start coding physics simulations! \nWhile three hours is hardly enough time for the briefest of introductions\, you will learn enough to get started and to find resources to continue your journey. As we cover some basic programming concepts\, you will code simulations for objects (1) moving at constant velocity\, (2) accelerating under the influence of a net force such as gravity\, allowing us to simulate projectile motion\, and (3) oscillating under a linear restoring force (a.k.a. a spring). Workshops in our ClimateSTEM Series are made possible with support from ConEd. \nAbout the Workshop \nThis workshop will introduce participants to the Ecology Disrupted teaching model to explore the ways in which everyday activities contribute to environmental issues through the disruption of normal ecological interactions. Making these connections is important for better integrating sustainability into our thinking about daily life activities. Workshop activities include: \n\nAn examination of the hidden ways people interact with even pristine environments\,\nA discussion of different environmental philosophers\,\nA deep dive into the link between evolutionary history and ecosystem function\,\nAn examination of the hidden environmental stories in everyday news\,\nAnd exploration of sustainability and the different ways daily life activities cause environmental issues through the disruption of regular ecosystem interactions.\n\nYael Wyner is Associate Professor of Teaching & Learning\, and Biology at the City College of New York. After completing her thesis research on the conservation genetics of lemurs\, Yael taught middle and high school for seven years. She developed the Ecology Disrupted model with National Science Foundation funding in collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History.
