SUMMARY:Scientific Communication - K12 Classroom Strategies for Researchers!
DESCRIPTION:K12 teachers have extensive experience simplifying complex topics for their students – come learn strategies to teach the next generation!\n\n\nDates & Locations (3 evenings): \nJuly 16-18\, 2024 | 5-7pm @Zoom \nLed by Tracy LaGrassa\, Eric Walters\, and Jason Sullivan \n \nHow do we convince others of the significance of our research? How can we communicate true-to-life research in a form that is easy to grasp by those not in our field? How can we offer models that are applicable to teachers and their students in their classrooms? In this 3-evening professional learning workshop we will look at strategies\, scaffolds\, and examples of teacher project plans and materials and templates that teachers have developed to translate scientific research into simplified\, student and classroom friendly materials and learning experiences. We will look at sample student work to explore how we can translate complex topics for audiences of diverse background knowledge\, to help students and others understand the significance of your research\, your process and your outcomes. \nDuring the workshop we will look at various rubrics and toolkits for translating research and projects into clear and captivating stories in various formats\, for a variety of student audiences. We will unpack examples of student proposals and drafts – in order to better align how we approach translating materials that share the rationale behind your work and where it fits into the bigger picture of daily life. \nIn this workshop series\, we will also dig into the multiple types of classroom inquiry\, how they overlap with your own processes\, and spend time translating some of what you do into classroom models of inquiry. \nThere are many sciences\, many ways to communicate\, and many audiences to communicate to! With the understanding that participating researchers may also be at different points in their respective research or project timelines\, and have different target communication products\, we will be inviting you to share a bit of detail about your project or research in advance\, your target audience and ideal product\, in order to better tailor the workshop experience to your needs. \n \nCost: (Limited # of tickets!) $55 \nGraduate Student Price: $25 \nSTEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching\, since 2011. But does it have to be?  The Life Sciences is a subject rich in anchoring models that all tie together and build off each other and create a rich story of interactions and scale! Recent shifts in pedagogical research\, NGSS/NYS Regents standards have caused movement towards this more conceptually based approach to biology education. We want to help you move your lessons and teaching there as well! \n  \nJoin us for our upcoming workshop\, “Life Science Evolved: Teaching Life Science in the Age of NGSS.”  This workshop will explore active learning strategies for deepening your student’s understanding of these crucial conceptual models and help you effectively implement a student-centered\, NGSS and NYS Regents-aligned approach to life science education.  To do this\, we will engage with key experiments and activities that can help students build a critical understanding of these models. SUMMARY:Foundations in Student-Centered\, Models-Based Physics (HS)
DESCRIPTION:Develop your skills and learn ways to engage your students in a student-centered\, model-based approach to deepen understanding of physics!\n\n\nLeaders: Paul Feffer \nDates: July 8-12\, 2024 (9:00-3:00pm) in person at Trinity School \nFoundations in Student-Centered\, Models-Based Mechanics for High School Physics (HS) \n  \nAbout the Workshop: \nActive and pre-service physics teachers\, join us this summer to develop your skills and learn ways to engage your students in a student-centered\, model-based\, curricular approach that will deepen their understanding of core physics concepts. \nAs a participant\, you will observe instruction from a student perspective (“student mode”) as you conduct lab activities that are central to each unit and which are ready for your own classroom. Alternating between student- and teacher-mode\, we will discuss the pedagogical rationale behind each activity\, and strategies for adapting to various student populations and classroom resources. The materials and techniques in this workshop are all directly useful in the NYS Regents Physics Curriculum and in most other intro-level high school physics courses\, including the AP Physics 1 curriculum. The activities emphasize depth over breadth; as a result\, they cover many\, but not by any means all\, of the topics in the Regents Physics and most other intro curricula. \nThe workshop will focus on fundamental physics mechanics concepts including kinematics (constant velocity and uniform acceleration)\, dynamics (Newton’s Laws)\, circular motion\, and the conserved quantities momentum and energy. The models we will navigate are comprised of descriptive\, diagrammatic\, graphical\, and algebraic representations\, which are developed through observation\, experimentation\, and reflection\, and “deployed” through prediction and verification. The constructivist process we will explore encourages student teamwork and active\, productive discussion\, not just with the teacher\, but with fellow classmates. \nIf you are a pre-service physics teacher\, this workshop will help you prepare for your first year teaching an algebra-based intro physics course. If you are an experienced physics teacher accustomed to a traditional textbook/lecture approach\, this workshop may give you new ideas for presenting concepts and encouraging a hands-on\, collaborative\, classroom culture. \n  \nCost: (Limited # of tickets!) \nEarly Bird $275 \nRegular Teacher Price $350 \nSchool Price $500 \nSTEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching\, since 2011. SUMMARY:Sustainable Maker Cultures in the K-8 Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Learn to mitigate climate change through classroom-ready games! Learn to play Ekos\, Energetic\, and more! Everyone will take home a game!\n\n\nMany thanks to ConEd for ongoing support of our ClimateSTEM Series! \nOur students use a variety of multimedia to share/report data including Scratch\, movie presentations\, micro bits\, to create game boards or upcycling materials. Our students use data to compose arguments\, create infographics\, and tell stories. \n  \nThis workshop will focus on adopting the Circular Maker Space approach. In our talk\, we share our experience about not having our own dedicated Maker Space\, with limited budget. Some of our initial maker projects generated a lot of waste and eventually some of them ended up in the garbage. Keeping the Sustainable Development Goals in mind\, we look into how we can utilize maker spaces to reduce waste and build resilience. Some ideas include virtual maker space to teach engineering design and engaging students in meaningful projects that instills a sense of community responsibility. \n  \nCost: FREE. SUMMARY:Modeling the Majestic Mathematics of Manhattanhenge! (2 Half Days)
DESCRIPTION:Model the motion of the sun-earth system with your students! Use simulations to predict the duration of daytime at our latitude or the next!\n\n\nTwo-part professional learning workshop. \nTitle: Modeling the Majestic Mathematics of Manhattanhenge \nDates: Two half days\, May 4 AND May 11\, 11:00am-2:00pm ET \nWorkshop leaders: Elissa Levy and Lawrence Whitier \n  \nYou probably learned in school that in the winter the weather is colder and the days are shorter because of the earth’s tilt. And you’ve probably heard of Manhattanhenge\, when the sunset aligns with Manhattan’s streets twice a year. But how are these phenomena connected? And how can our students model these phenomena in ways that deepen understanding and spark further questions? \nIn this two-session series\, we’ll build out a few GeoGebra simulations to model the motion of the sun-earth system\, which will enable us to predict the duration of daytime at our latitude or the next occurrence of Manhattanhenge. In the first session\, we’ll use multiple representations to explore how sunlight hits the earth\, aligning on terminology and geometric principles. In the second session\, we’ll construct 2-D GeoGebra models to make sense of the geometry\, and extend our GeoGebra models into three dimensions – as well as discussing classroom applications. This workshop does not require any prior GeoGebra experience and is open to all teachers. We expect the content to be particularly relevant for high school math\, physics\, and earth science courses. \n  \nCost: $45 (Limited # of tickets!) \nSTEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching\, since 2011. All workshops over 2hrs offer CTLE. CUNY Pre-service teachers may attend for free. Please reach out if your school requires an invoice. We are an NYCDOE MTAC Vendor.

SUMMARY:STEP UP Physics Together Regional Networking + Coding Physics Simulations!
DESCRIPTION:STEP UP: Physics Together coffee hour followed by a “Coding Physics Simulations” professional learning workshop! AND EQUIPMENT GIVEAWAY!\n\n\nNETWORKING + EQUIPMENT GIVEAWAY + CODING PHYSICS SIMS WORKSHOP! \n  \nSTEP UP: Physics Together will host a coffee hour (9-10am) before the physics workshop. All workshop participants are invited to join us for coffee\, juice and donuts. Learn more about STEP UP\, connect or reconnect with STEP UP Advocates and enjoy the company of other science teachers! \nSTEP UP is a national community of physics teachers\, researchers\, and professional societies. We design high school physics lessons to empower teachers\, create cultural change\, and inspire young women to pursue physics in college. STEP UP Advocates are teachers of physics working to inspire young women to pursue physics in their classrooms. There are approximately 60 STEP UP Advocates in the NYC region and STEP UP will open up applications for additional Advocates soon. Our Advocates are on the front lines of improving gender equity in physics! You can learn more about STEP UP here: https://engage.aps.org/stepup/home \n  \nIntroduction to Coding Physics Simulations for Teachers! with Paul Feffer \nIn this professional development workshop for teachers\, we will learn the basics of the JavaScript programming language within the p5.js environment with a focus on constructing physics simulations. Javascript is one of the most popular programming languages today which is used for web app development and desktop and mobile applications. p5.js is a JavaScript library of “tools” designed for creative coding with easy access to graphics and animation. These capabilities make p5.js ideal for physics teachers with little or no programming experience to start coding physics simulations! \nWhile three hours is hardly enough time for the briefest of introductions\, you will learn enough to get started and to find resources to continue your journey. As we cover some basic programming concepts\, you will code simulations for objects (1) moving at constant velocity\, (2) accelerating under the influence of a net force such as gravity\, allowing us to simulate projectile motion\, and (3) oscillating under a linear restoring force (a.k.a. a spring). As time permits\, we may also explore simulating orbital dynamics\, and how to use “leapfrog” integration to ensure a stable oscillatory motion that conserves energy. \n  \nCost: $25 (Limited # of tickets!) \nSTEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching\, since 2011. All workshops over 2hrs offer CTLE. CUNY Pre-service teachers may attend for free. Please reach out if your school requires an invoice. We are an NYCDOE MTAC Vendor. \n

SUMMARY:Socratic Dialogue: For Teachers! (ALL GRADES)
DESCRIPTION:Teachers ask 400 questions per day or 70\,000 questions per year! They cultivate curiosity\, foster dialogue\, and build science identity!\n\n\nLed by: Chris Resch \nDate: Mar 9\, 2024\, 11:00am-2:00pm ET\, via Zoom \nInspired by our popular Socratic Dialogue\, we now bring you “Socratic Dialogue: Teacher Edition!”  \nOn average\, teachers ask 400 questions per day\, or roughly 70\,000 questions per year. What are all these questions for? How do teachers come up with all these questions in the first place?  What strategies are used for coming up with questions in the moment that are responsive to student thinking?  In what ways do these questions cultivate curiosity\, foster dialogue\, and build your students’ science identities?  \nAt its heart\, crafting high-quality questions and knowing when to use them is a difficult skill to master.  In this workshop\, we will begin to explore the tip of this skill iceberg by examining the various questioning models\, tactics\, and mindsets that exist.  We will explore the anatomy of a question\, how the anatomy of a question can promote different thought actions in students\, and explore different frameworks with which to analyze questions.  We will then conclude with time to practice questions on the fly!  Join us for a workshop that will help you refine your Socratic questioning skills to inspire and co-generate thinking with your students! \nCost: (Limited # of tickets!) $25 per person to reserve your spot. \nSTEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching\, since 2011. All workshops over 2hrs offer CTLE. CUNY Pre-service teachers may attend for free. Please reach out if your school requires an invoice. We are an NYCDOE MTAC Vendor.

SUMMARY:From Classroom to Research Lab! Part 2 - Student Peer Review Protocols
DESCRIPTION:No more cookbook science labs! Engage your students in real\, student-driven research! Part 2 – Setting up protocols for student peer review.Leaders: Tracy LaGrassa and JoAnn Gensert Part 1 – Developing Testable Questions – Nov 4\, 9:30-11:30am ET via Zoom Part 2 – Protocols for Student Peer Review – Nov 18\, 9:30-11:30am ET via Zoom Description: Are you tired of cookbook-style science labs? Would you like to engage your students in real\, student-driven independent research projects? Engaging high school and middle school students in the authentic research process stirs their curiosity and promotes creativity\, while introducing them to how science is done. PART 1. In this workshop\, we will model and share resources that teach students how to develop testable research questions\, design and execute their own rigorous experiments to answer those questions\, use statistics to analyze their results and present their data. Follow-up meetups will provide a space for reflecting on- and refining- your process of turning your science classroom into a research lab! In this workshop participants will put on their student-hats and dig into several phenomenon/experimental models and participants will learn to scaffold each aspect of the scientific process with mini-lessons. PART 2. Continuing our deep dive into phenomenon/experimental models\, participants will look at strategies\, scaffolds\, and sample student work to explore how we have students write proposals and drafts\, and engage in peer review\, as well as how students generate a quad chart/mini-poster to report what they did and how and why they did it\, showing they understand not only their experiment\, but also the rationale behind their experiment and where it fits into the bigger picture. Content will be adapted to the needs and experience of participants.

SUMMARY:NYAS SiR workshop- Get Ready to Launch Research Projects w/Students! (code)
DESCRIPTION:Take project ideas and intentionally design the introduction to maximize student engagement\, interest\, and buy-in!\n\n\nLed by Jason Sullivan \nThis workshop will focus on taking project ideas and intentionally designing the introduction to maximize student engagement\, interest\, and buy-in. Participants investigate strategies for using a localized-phenomena (or making an existing research project more relevant) to create a genuinely student-centered project authentically. Participants then draft/design activities and resources to help identify what students already know about the key project concepts and what questions they already have to initiate science inquiry. Participants will engage with one another in a process of “workshopping” a project with colleagues. Ideally this would be offered early in the fall to get ahead of the introduction of the project in the classroom. \n\nProject Planning & mapping to existing curriculum. \nSelecting phenomena.\nEngaging students with phenomena in multiple modalities; ‘making it local and relevant’.\nPeer review prompts.

It was very well organized and seemed perfectly scaffolded for helping me as a newbie.” \nWhat do you want students to know and be able to do when they leave your course? How do you communicate these objectives to your students clearly? How do you design instruction and provide feedback that helps students to meet your goals? By critically examining how we assess student work\, we can improve instruction\, student attitudes towards learning\, and equity in grading. “Standards-Based Grading” provides students itemized feedback according to your course learning objectives. Students are then better able to know what they understand and what concepts need further practice and reassessment. In short\, SBG encourages a growth-mindset\, practice-until-you-succeed approach to learning. \nThe workshop\, tailored to middle and upper school STEM teachers\, guides you through an incremental adoption of SBG practices\, provides sample learning standards\, assessments\, and gradebooks\, and gives you structured time and feedback for tailoring these tools for your own classes. Throughout\, we will consider how to make an effective assessment strategy that is an integral part of a cyclical learning process. If at all possible\, attend with a colleague! \n \nCost: (Limited # of tickets!) \nEarly Bird $165 \nRegular Teacher Price $210 \nSchool Price $300 \nSTEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching\, since 2011.
