Week 1 will include the pedagogy introduction\, scientific methods\, 1-D kinematics\, and Newton’s Laws\, and Week 2 will cover 2-D kinematics\, energy\, and momentum. \nFoundations in Student-Centered\, Models-Based Mechanics for High School Physics (HS) \nAbout the Workshop: \nActive and pre-service physics teachers\, join us this summer to develop your skills and learn ways to engage your students in a student-centered\, model-based\, curricular approach that will deepen their understanding of core physics concepts. \nAs a participant\, you will observe instruction from a student perspective (“student mode”) as you conduct lab activities that are central to each unit and which are ready for your own classroom. Alternating between student- and teacher-mode\, we will discuss the pedagogical rationale behind each activity\, and strategies for adapting to various student populations and classroom resources. The materials and techniques in this workshop are all directly useful in the NYS Regents Physics Curriculum and in most other intro-level high school physics courses\, including the AP Physics 1 curriculum. The activities emphasize depth over breadth; as a result\, they cover many\, but not by any means all\, of the topics in the Regents Physics and most other intro curricula. \nThe workshop will focus on fundamental physics mechanics concepts including kinematics (constant velocity and uniform acceleration)\, dynamics (Newton’s Laws)\, circular motion\, and the conserved quantities momentum and energy. The models we will navigate are comprised of descriptive\, diagrammatic\, graphical\, and algebraic representations\, which are developed through observation\, experimentation\, and reflection\, and “deployed” through prediction and verification. The constructivist process we will explore encourages student teamwork and active\, productive discussion\, not just with the teacher\, but with fellow classmates. \nIf you are a pre-service physics teacher\, this workshop will help you prepare for your first year teaching an algebra-based intro physics course. In spring\, Central Park becomes a global birding hot-spot. Thousands of colorful songbirds migrating from the tropics stop in the park each day in April\, May and early June to refuel on insects before continuing north toward their breeding grounds. Join us for a walk through the north end of the park to learn how to identify these birds—flycatchers\, warblers\, thrushes\, raptors and more—and search for rarities. Learn how to identify the birds and find out about their behavior. Bring walking footwear and binoculars and/or a camera with a good telephoto lens. Don’t be late—We will start walking at 7:45 am sharp. \nIncludes slides and other classroom-friendly resources! \n  \nCost:  $50 Stipends for first 8 teachers; free to all others (Limited # of tickets!) \nThe first eight teacher-participants to sign up will receive a stipend of $50 for this workshop! In this interactive workshop\, we will share our cross-curricular Hudson River Estuary Unit with an emphasis on Climate Change and provide a framework to create your own local or climate change unit. Javascript is one of the most popular programming languages today which is used for web app development and desktop and mobile applications. p5.js is a JavaScript library of “tools” designed for creative coding with easy access to graphics and animation. These capabilities make p5.js ideal for physics teachers with little or no programming experience to start coding physics simulations! \nWhile three hours is hardly enough time for the briefest of introductions\, you will learn enough to get started and to find resources to continue your journey. As we cover some basic programming concepts\, you will code simulations for objects (1) moving at constant velocity\, (2) accelerating under the influence of a net force such as gravity\, allowing us to simulate projectile motion\, and (3) oscillating under a linear restoring force (a.k.a. a spring). Workshops in our ClimateSTEM Series are made possible with support from ConEd. \nAbout the Workshop \nThis workshop will introduce participants to the Ecology Disrupted teaching model to explore the ways in which everyday activities contribute to environmental issues through the disruption of normal ecological interactions. Making these connections is important for better integrating sustainability into our thinking about daily life activities. Workshop activities include: \n\nAn examination of the hidden ways people interact with even pristine environments\,\nA discussion of different environmental philosophers\,\nA deep dive into the link between evolutionary history and ecosystem function\,\nAn examination of the hidden environmental stories in everyday news\,\nAnd exploration of sustainability and the different ways daily life activities cause environmental issues through the disruption of regular ecosystem interactions.\n\nYael Wyner is Associate Professor of Teaching & Learning\, and Biology at the City College of New York. After completing her thesis research on the conservation genetics of lemurs\, Yael taught middle and high school for seven years. She developed the Ecology Disrupted model with National Science Foundation funding in collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History. Participants will continue to work in student mode to generate noticings and wonderings as well as create models that attempt to explain what they have observed. Once participants have had the opportunity to share their models with each other\, they will develop questions about the models and determine whether those questions can be answered in the science classroom. After performing the investigation\, we will make a claim supported by evidence and reasoning\, as well as a second claim about how the investigation was important for understanding the phenomenon. Is this enough evidence? We will engage in discussions about how texts can be used to provide additional evidence to support our claim. Throughout the workshop\, participants will have opportunities to engage in many of the practices of scientists and engineers\, including reading\, writing\, speaking\, and listening. DESCRIPTION:See the scope of change and cooperation needed to transform the city’s energy demand & supply in time to meet goals for the Paris Agreement.\n\n\nLeaders: Richard Reiss\, Rachel Wax\, Matthew Sarker \nDate/Time: February 11\, 10am-1pm\, In-person at Trinity School \nDescription: \nWe designed a board game about the future of New York City! Energetic is a cooperative team challenge in which you work to decarbonize New York City by building 16 GW of carbon neutral power by 2035. Each player is given the chance to see the scope of change and cooperation needed to transform the city’s energy demand and supply in time to meet goals for the Paris Agreement. Energetic is used as part of climate courses at Carnegie Mellon\, Vanderbilt\, Bronx Science\, and Hunter College HS\, as well as at other universities and high schools. At this workshop we will hear from teachers that use the game\, and then we will try it ourselves! Can we keep the lights on in NYC in 2035? \nMatt S. – I used the game in my physics class as a potential end project for students to engage with. The physics ideas of gigawatts and the attributes of energy sources were embedded in the context of decision making. The game itself is essentially a model\, and NGSS connections to the science practices standards related to the crosscutting concept of science and society are well aligned with the game. \nNGSS Science and Engineering Practices: \n\nDevelop and/or use a model (including mathematical and computational) to generate data to support explanations\, predict phenomena\, analyze systems\, and/or solve problems.\n\nNew York State: \n\nScience and Engineering Practices: HS-PS1-1: Use a model to predict the relationships between systems or between components of a system.\nEngineering Design: HS-ETS1-1: Analyze a major global challenge to specify qualitative and quantitative criteria and constraints for solutions that account for societal needs and wants.”\n\nGame sets will be available for play and to learn during the workshop. Our materials use the framework of water footprints\, which include the water it takes to make the foods we eat\, the things we buy and the services we use\, in addition to our direct water use from a tap. \nWe will share the tools\, lesson plans and informational resources from our website – watercalculator.org – about how we use water and how that use impacts the planet. It is critical for students (and others) to understand their own impacts before they face a water crisis\, and which can make understanding any necessary cuts in order to meet water conservation goals a much lighter lift. In this workshop\, participants will explore the NOAA Climate Explorer and the US Climate Resilience Toolkit and will leave with a ready-made unit that helps students tell the story of climate change with data.

Participants will engage as model students in select lessons that have been developed to help understand the strengths and limitations of the conceptual model used to describe the complex energy transfer in the Earth system. After being provided time to briefly investigate and evaluate the lessons\, participants will consider how to best connect their students and communities with this complex topic\, and spend time developing a learning progression for their classroom’s specific educational objectives. Additional NASA products and tools will be introduced (as time allows) that may assist participants when identifying resources required to allow for students to connect phenomena to a complex model.

SUMMARY:Visualizing Student Thinking with SageModeler (ES/MS)
DESCRIPTION:Diagramming and creating models are skills that allow students of all ages to illustrate their thinking and share their thinking! \n\n\n\nLeaders: Kimesha Reid-Grant and Juliette Guarino Berg \n\n\n\nClimateSTEM Series\, Focus on “Systems Thinking” . \n\n\n\nDiagramming and creating models are skills that allow students of all ages to illustrate their thinking and share their thought processes with others. In this workshop\, participants will be introduced to the diagramming and systems modeling tool SageModeler\, a “free\, web-based\, and open-source software to engage students in systems thinking through designing\, building\, and revising models.” Workshop participants will have the opportunity to explore relevant phenomena such as energy flow in ecosystems and factors contributing to the health of a body of water in “student mode\,” beginning with basic diagramming skills and working towards creating a static equilibrium model. Participants will also spend time in “teacher mode” considering ways to use SageModeler within their current scope and sequence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThree-Dimensional Next Generation Science Standards Addressed: \n\n\n\nPerformance Expectations \n\n\n\n\n\n5-PS3-1. Use models to describe that energy in animals’ food (used for body repair\, growth\, motion\, and to maintain body warmth) was once energy from the sun.\n\n\n\n\n\n5-LS2-1. Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants\, animals\, decomposers\, and the environment.\n\n\n\n\n\nMS-ESS3-3. Apply scientific principles to design a method for monitoring and minimizing a human impact on the environment.\n\n\n\n\n\nMS-ESS3-4. Construct an argument supported by evidence for how increases in human population and per-capita consumption of natural resources impact Earth’s systems.\n\n\n\n\n\nScience and Engineering Practices \n\n\n\n\nDeveloping and Using Models\n\n\n\n\nCrosscutting Concepts: \n\n\n\n\nCause and Effect\n\n\n\nPatterns\n\n\n\nStability and Change\n\n\n\nSystems and System Models\n\n\n\n\nMaterials needed: Laptops\, charge cord\, notebook\, pencil\, cutouts for ecosystems. \n\n\n\nCost:  $25 (Limited # of tickets!) \n\n\n\nSTEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching\, since 2011. We will go through essential tools step by step\, to help you work independently and gain the confidence to tackle common pitfalls. DESCRIPTION:During the Fall Migration\, a huge variety of birds stop in Central Park to rest and refuel for their journey South! \n\n\n\nLeaders: Peter Davenport and Fernand Brunschwig \n\n\n\nFormat and Dates: One 3.5 Hour Session\, 10/8/2022 (7:30-11:30am EDT – raindate Sunday Oct 9) \n\n\n\nGroup Meets at 103rd Street & Central Park West \n\n\n\nDescription: Central Park is an urban oasis for birds as well as people. During the fall\, a variety of birds stop in Central Park to rest and refuel during their migration south\, while others make it their temporary home. Join us for a walk through the north end of the park to learn about some of the “snow birds” and winter residents—sparrows\, finches\, sapsuckers\, waterfowl\, blackbirds\, raptors—and search for late migrants and rarities such as warblers\, flycatchers\, shorebirds\, owls and more. Learn how to identify the birds and find out about their behavior. Bring walking footwear and binoculars and/or a camera with a good telephoto lens. Don’t be late—We will start walking at 7:45 am sharp. \n\n\n\nIncludes slides and other classroom-friendly resources!
