SUMMARY:A Bird Walk in Central Park for Teachers: Enjoy the fall migration!
DESCRIPTION:During the Fall Migration\, a huge variety of birds stop in Central Park to rest and refuel for their journey South!\n\n\nKEY INFORMATION\n\nDate/Time: Saturday\, October 18\, from 8:45am – 12:00pm.\n(RAINDATE: Sunday\, October 19\, from 8:45am – 12:00pm)\nLocation: Within Central Park in Manhattan\, meeting at 103rd and Central Park West at the pedestrian park entrance\nWorkshop Leader: Peter Davenport (bio below)\nAppropriate for: Current/retired teachers\, educators\, administrators for any grade level.\n3hrs of CTLE credit offered\n\n  \n  \nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION\nCalling all teachers who love birding! We invite you to join us for a morning walk in Manhattan’s Central Park\, an urban oasis for birds as well as people. Each fall\, Central Park becomes a global birding hot spot! Thousands of colorful songbirds migrating from the tropics stop in the park each day in April\, May and early June to refuel on insects before continuing north toward their breeding grounds. \nTake a leisurely walk with us through the north end of the park. While there is never a guarantee of what we will see\, expect to see flycatchers\, warblers\, thrushes\, raptors and more\, and we will search for rarities amongst them. Learn about beahviors and how to use guides\, apps\, and your eyes and ears to identify the birds we’ll see. Rain or shine the birds will be in the park\, but if it’s raining too much we will postpone. Bring walking footwear\, binoculars\, a camera with a good telephoto lens if you have one\, and water (/coffee). After an introduction\, including slides and other classroom-friendly materials\, we will start walking and watching. Don’t be late! We will set out 9:00am sharp. \nNOTE: This is a fully outdoor event. We will pass bathrooms along the way\, but please dress appropriately\, wear sunscreen and a hat\, and bring water and a snack as needed. Please do NOT bring your dog\, as that may scare birds away. Central Park has accessible bathrooms and paths\, but those paths may be uneven at times. \n  \nWORKSHOP LEADER\nPeter Davenport is a Board member of the 150-year old science-based birding group\, the Linnaean Society of New York\, and he has taught middle school science in the Bronx for 12 years. Formerly\, he developed and led outdoor programs at Walden Pond in Concord\, Mass.\, and for the Appalachian Mountain Club in Pinkham Notch\, N.H. \n  \nABOUT STEMteachersNYC\nSince 2011\, STEMteachersNYC has delivered professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching. SUMMARY:FREE Climate Game Day for Teachers! Ekos\, Energetic & More!
DESCRIPTION:Learn to mitigate climate change through classroom-ready games! Learn to play Ekos\, Energetic\, and more! Everyone will take home a game!\n\n\nMany thanks to ConEd for ongoing support of our ClimateSTEM Series! \nJoin us in-person April 13\, for a day of learning to play classroom friendly Climate Change simulation and solutioning games! We will be joined by some of the game creators\, and game sets will be raffled! \nYour own middle and/or high schooler children (not your students) are welcome to join us – please email yadana@stemteachersnyc.org to let us know! \n  \nEkos \nIt is the near future in the City of Ekos. The planet is rapidly urbanizing\, placing tremendous pressure on cities and urban areas to provide good living conditions for the majority of humanity…\nA group of community members must come together to design and build a network of resilient systems\, and envision a more equitable and sustainable Ekos in the face of climate change and other challenges. As one of six actors — a City Council Speaker\, City Planner\, Community Organizer\, Ecologist\, Designer\, and Modeler — it is your mission to use resources wisely\, collaborate with others and improve the adaptive capacity of your systems against extreme events like heat waves\, floods\, power outages and pandemics. \nTo win\, players must use systems thinking and explore concepts of resilience to collaborate\, problem solve\, and envision just urban futures. \nVisit https://www.ekosgame.com for more details. \n  \nEnergetic \nDecarbonize New York City with the game of Energetic! \nSee the scope of change and cooperation needed to transform the city’s energy demand & supply in time to meet goals for the Paris Agreement. \nWe designed a board game about the future of New York City! Energetic is a cooperative team challenge in which you work to decarbonize New York City by building 16 GW of carbon neutral power by 2035. Each player is given the chance to see the scope of change and cooperation needed to transform the city’s energy demand and supply in time to meet goals for the Paris Agreement. Energetic is used as part of climate courses at Carnegie Mellon\, Vanderbilt\, Bronx Science\, and Hunter College HS\, as well as at other universities and high schools. At this workshop we will hear from teachers that use the game\, and then we will try it ourselves! Can we keep the lights on in NYC in 2035? \nMatt S. – I used the game in my physics class as a potential end project for students to engage with. The physics ideas of gigawatts and the attributes of energy sources were embedded in the context of decision making. The game itself is essentially a model\, and NGSS connections to the science practices standards related to the crosscutting concept of science and society are well aligned with the game. \nNGSS Science and Engineering Practices: \n\nDevelop and/or use a model (including mathematical and computational) to generate data to support explanations\, predict phenomena\, analyze systems\, and/or solve problems.\n\nNew York State: \n\nScience and Engineering Practices: HS-PS1-1: Use a model to predict the relationships between systems or between components of a system.\nEngineering Design: HS-ETS1-1: Analyze a major global challenge to specify qualitative and quantitative criteria and constraints for solutions that account for societal needs and wants.”\n\nVisit Energetic to find out more and order your own set. \n  \nCost: FREE. Game sets will be raffled off to participants. You must attend to be in the running! Our ClimateSTEM Series is supported by ConEd. \n  \nSTEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching\, since 2011. SUMMARY:Introduction to Teaching Systems & Resilience Thinking (Runs 1 Full Day)
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Teaching Systems & Resilience Thinking \n\n\n\nDec 2\, 9:00am-3:00pm (1 full day\, 6 CTLE); In-person at Trinity School \n\n\n\nLed by Don Hass (Paleontological Research Inst.\, NY) and Glen Stuart (STEMteachersNYC\, Montgomery HS). \n\n\n\nDescription: Amplify your teaching prowess and deepen your grasp of climate change\, scale\, and feedback loops with an immersive dive into the intricacies of this vital subject! \n\n\n\nOn Day 1\, explore climate change chemistry through interactive demonstrations and a thorough exploration of the Seuss effect. The key phenomenon we’ll explore is the story of a gallon of gasoline. When explored in just a little depth\, and at the scale of US consumption\, participants will be shocked – and be able to take the lesson directly to their classrooms. It will motivate you and your students to take action on climate. \n\n\n\nAfter our launch with a demonstration of ice melting in salt vs freshwater\, Day 2 will ask\, “How does one study a complex system consisting of multiple negative feedback loops of varying strengths\, and scales interconnected with multiple positive feedback loops of varying strengths\, scales\, and directions?” Computer simulations and conflicting contentions will spotlight feedback loops that shape our climate\, specifically albedo and convection as well as common misconceptions. \n\n\n\nBoth sessions will share extensive classroom resources. \n\n\n\nCost: (Limited # of tickets!) $45 per person to reserve your spot. The first ten attendees who complete both half days will receive a stipend of $100. SUMMARY:Teaching Hudson River Data - Taking Classroom Research Outside! (ES/MS)
DESCRIPTION:Teach about Climate Change through a Hudson River Estuary Unit\, and learn to bring classroom research outside!\n\n\nLeaders: Michelle Velho\, Grace Sanvictores \nDates: March 25\, 2023 (9:00am-12:00pm EDT\, via Zoom) \nWorkshops in our ClimateSTEM Series are made possible with support from ConEd. \nAbout the Workshop \nCome explore modern-day practices and historical perspectives on climate change! SUMMARY:FREE - Ecology Disrupted: Connecting Daily Life to Environmental Issues ALL
DESCRIPTION:Explore the ways in which everyday activities contribute to environmental issues through the disruption of normal ecological interactions.\n\n\nEcology Disrupted: Connecting Daily Life to Environmental Issues \nLeaders: Yeal Wyner \nDates: March 12\, 2023 (9:00-12:00pm EDT\, in person at City College) \nTickets: The first eight teacher-participants to sign up will receive a stipend of $50 for this two hour workshop! Free to all other attendees. Workshops in our ClimateSTEM Series are made possible with support from ConEd. \nAbout the Workshop \nThis workshop will introduce participants to the Ecology Disrupted teaching model to explore the ways in which everyday activities contribute to environmental issues through the disruption of normal ecological interactions. Making these connections is important for better integrating sustainability into our thinking about daily life activities. Workshop activities include: \n\nAn examination of the hidden ways people interact with even pristine environments\,\nA discussion of different environmental philosophers\,\nA deep dive into the link between evolutionary history and ecosystem function\,\nAn examination of the hidden environmental stories in everyday news\,\nAnd exploration of sustainability and the different ways daily life activities cause environmental issues through the disruption of regular ecosystem interactions.\n\nYael Wyner is Associate Professor of Teaching & Learning\, and Biology at the City College of New York. SUMMARY:Decarbonize New York City with the game of Energetic! (HS+)
DESCRIPTION:See the scope of change and cooperation needed to transform the city’s energy demand & supply in time to meet goals for the Paris Agreement.\n\n\nLeaders: Richard Reiss\, Rachel Wax\, Matthew Sarker \nDate/Time: February 11\, 10am-1pm\, In-person at Trinity School \nDescription: \nWe designed a board game about the future of New York City! \nNGSS Science and Engineering Practices: \n\nDevelop and/or use a model (including mathematical and computational) to generate data to support explanations\, predict phenomena\, analyze systems\, and/or solve problems.\n\nNew York State: \n\nScience and Engineering Practices: HS-PS1-1: Use a model to predict the relationships between systems or between components of a system.\nEngineering Design: HS-ETS1-1: Analyze a major global challenge to specify qualitative and quantitative criteria and constraints for solutions that account for societal needs and wants.”\n\nGame sets will be available for play and to learn during the workshop. Additional sets will be available for purchase at a discount the day of the workshop. \nVisit Energetic to find out more and order your own set. \n \nCost:  FREE. The first eight teacher-participants to sign up will receive FREE admission and one unit of the Energetic board game (valued at $80)! Free to all other attendees. SUMMARY:How Our Food Moves Water Around the Planet (MS/HS)
DESCRIPTION:Learn about water use\, scarcity and drought\, in order to understand water the impacts on our local and global communities.\n\n\nLeaders: Robin Madel\, Kai Olson-Sawyer \nDates: January 28\, 2023 (1:00-4:00pm EDT\, via Zoom) \nTickets: The first ten teacher-participants to sign up will receive a stipend of $50 for this two hour workshop! Free to all other attendees. Our ClimateSTEM Series is supported by ConEd. \nAbout the Workshop \nThis workshop educates teacher-participants about direct and virtual water use as well as water scarcity and drought\, in order to prepare to help students understand their own water use and the impacts it has on their local and global community. Our materials use the framework of water footprints\, which include the water it takes to make the foods we eat\, the things we buy and the services we use\, in addition to our direct water use from a tap. \nWe will share the tools\, lesson plans and informational resources from our website – watercalculator.org – about how we use water and how that use impacts the planet. It is critical for students (and others) to understand their own impacts before they face a water crisis\, and which can make understanding any necessary cuts in order to meet water conservation goals a much lighter lift. This is applicable in NYS and beyond\, because no place is immune to drought\, even a water-rich place like New York\, which is currently experiencing varying levels of drought. \n \nCost: The first ten teacher-participants to sign up will receive a stipend of $50 for this two hour workshop! SUMMARY:Climate Models & Data Part 1 - Visualizing Climate Projections (HS)
DESCRIPTION:Help students build a better understanding of the connection between possible climate scenarios and global climate model outputs. \n\n\n\nLeaders: Eric Walters \n\n\n\nAs defined by NOAA\, a global climate model is a “complex mathematical representation of the major climate system components and their interactions.” Students often believe that climate change will impact all global locations equally. How do we help students build a better understanding of the connection between possible climate scenarios\, global climate model outputs\, and associated climate projections. In this workshop\, participants will explore the NOAA Climate Explorer and the US Climate Resilience Toolkit and will leave with a ready-made unit that helps students tell the story of climate change with data.

SUMMARY:Earth's Energy Budget Using My NASA Data Lessons (HS)
DESCRIPTION:Understand strengths and limitations of the conceptual model used to describe the complex energy transfer in the Earth systems. \n\n\n\nLeaders: Nathalie Macke \n\n\n\nClimateSTEM Series\, Focus on “Systems Thinking” . \n\n\n\nA new suite of My NASA Data lessons that address Earth’s energy budget have been developed by teacher interns for NASA this past summer. Participants will engage as model students in select lessons that have been developed to help understand the strengths and limitations of the conceptual model used to describe the complex energy transfer in the Earth system. After being provided time to briefly investigate and evaluate the lessons\, participants will consider how to best connect their students and communities with this complex topic\, and spend time developing a learning progression for their classroom’s specific educational objectives. Additional NASA products and tools will be introduced (as time allows) that may assist participants when identifying resources required to allow for students to connect phenomena to a complex model.

SUMMARY:How Our Food Moves Water Around the Planet (MS/HS)
DESCRIPTION:Learn about water use\, scarcity and drought\, in order to understand water the impacts on our local and global communities. \n\n\n\nLeaders: Robin Madel\, Kai Olson-Sawyer \n\n\n\nThis workshop educates teacher-participants about direct and virtual water use as well as water scarcity and drought\, in order to prepare to help students understand their own water use and the impacts it has on their local and global community. Our materials use the framework of water footprints\, which include the water it takes to make the foods we eat\, the things we buy and the services we use\, in addition to our direct water use from a tap. \n\n\n\nWe will share the tools\, lesson plans and informational resources from our website – watercalculator.org – about how we use water and how that use impacts the planet.

SUMMARY:Climate Physics Modeling (HS)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a modeling-friendly workshop on a physics energy unit that is framed around climate change. \n\n\n\nLeaders: Elissa Levy \n\n\n\nJoin us for a modeling-friendly physics energy unit that is framed around climate change. We’ll apply energy bar charts to climate-related energy transfer and will explore the relationship between colloquial energy resources and canonical energy forms. After modeling global warming\, we’ll read and critique Eunice Foote’s original 1856 paper on carbon dioxide and heat. These activities have been done in 9th grade physics and can be adapted for any middle or high school classroom.

SUMMARY:Visualizing Student Thinking with SageModeler (ES/MS)
DESCRIPTION:Diagramming and creating models are skills that allow students of all ages to illustrate their thinking and share their thinking! \n\n\n\nLeaders: Kimesha Reid-Grant and Juliette Guarino Berg \n\n\n\nClimateSTEM Series\, Focus on “Systems Thinking” . \n\n\n\nDiagramming and creating models are skills that allow students of all ages to illustrate their thinking and share their thought processes with others. In this workshop\, participants will be introduced to the diagramming and systems modeling tool SageModeler\, a “free\, web-based\, and open-source software to engage students in systems thinking through designing\, building\, and revising models.” Workshop participants will have the opportunity to explore relevant phenomena such as energy flow in ecosystems and factors contributing to the health of a body of water in “student mode\,” beginning with basic diagramming skills and working towards creating a static equilibrium model. Participants will also spend time in “teacher mode” considering ways to use SageModeler within their current scope and sequence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThree-Dimensional Next Generation Science Standards Addressed: \n\n\n\nPerformance Expectations \n\n\n\n\n\n5-PS3-1.
