If you’ve encountered questions about workload\, reassessments\, grading policies\, equity\, or communication with students and families\, this workshop provides space to explore those challenges in depth. We’ll evaluate the impact of your current systems\, set goals for growth\, and revisit how standards-based approaches shape teaching\, learning\, and classroom culture. \nA central focus is learning from each other. Plan on sharing your systems and experiences. Together\, we will have a range of approaches to build on that meet different classroom and school needs\, and we will turn questions and challenges to the group for discussion and problem-solving. Through this collaborative work plus roleplay\, and “elevator speech” practice\, we’ll refine both our implementation and how we message this work to students\, families\, and colleagues. \nThroughout the workshop\, we will include dedicated time to align and refine your course materials—policies\, assessments\, and objectives—while also considering what is sustainable in day-to-day practice. With a balance of collaboration and work time\, you’ll leave with concrete revisions\, practical strategies\, and clear next steps to take your standards-based assessment and feedback system to the next level. \n  \nWorkshop Leaders\nSharona Kahn is the Mathematics Department Chair at the Berkeley Carroll School\, where she has taught and advised middle school students for the past eight years. With 16 years of experience in education\, she focuses on creating hands-on\, equitable learning experiences that help students develop deep mathematical understanding. Since joining STEMteachersNYC in 2017\, Sharona has both taken and led workshops\, with a particular passion for standards-based feedback and assessment. She is a recipient of the Siegel STEM Fellow Endowment. \nS.K. Smith “Smith” was raised by wolves in the ancient town of Joplin\, Missouri\, where\, at the ripe\, old age of twelve she ran off with a second-rate traveling circus.  Having learned the necessary skills of fire-breathing and hoop-jumping\, she now spends her time roaming about the country planting plastic flamingos where they are unwanted.  She can belt out a mean torch song in a pinch and–having taught in and around the great cities of Chicago\, St. Louis\, and New York–is most excited to work with this fantastic cadre of teachers excited about the wild and wooly world of feedback and assessment.  You can reach her to talk about truffles\, tarts\, and teaching at: ssmith@riverdale.edu. \nMark Schober teaches high school physics and astronomy at Trinity School in Manhattan\, and has led teacher workshops for the St. Louis Area Physics Teachers\, the American Modeling Teachers Association\, the American Association of Physics Teachers\, and STEMteachersNYC\, from Introduction to Modeling Instruction workshops\, to Make-n-Take workshops\, to rethinking assessment and feedback to improve student learning. How and what we assess fundamentally affects how we teach\, how our students learn\, and the relationships we build with them. By critically examining traditional grading practices—and the ways they can contribute to student inequalities—we’ll explore how shifting to a standards-based approach helps clarify what we want students to know and be able to do\, and how to communicate those objectives clearly. \nOver the course of the workshop\, you’ll be guided through the steps to set up your classes for standards-based grading\, with a focus on incremental\, manageable change. Together\, we’ll craft and refine learning objectives\, connect those objectives to assessments\, and explore how to provide feedback that helps students meet your goals. DESCRIPTION:A 4-day workshop aiming to help NY City/State Earth Science Regents teachers work within the new lab and exam structures.\n\n\nKEY INFORMATION\n\nLOCATION: CUNY City College of NY campus in the North Academic Center building\, located at 137th St. and Amsterdam Ave.\, Manhattan\nDATE & TIME: Tuesday\, July 21 – Friday\, July 24\, 2026\, 9am – 3pm daily.\nLED BY: Kristina Coker and Liza Blackman (bios below)\nCTLE AVAILABLE: 24\nTHIS WORKSHOP IS FOR: NY Earth Science Regents teachers\n\nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION\nNow that the revised NY State Earth Science Regents labs and exam have been in place for two school years\, with three new labs and a new literacy component for the exam\, it’s time to assess and reflect on how you can best prepare your students and utilize existing and new resources. This bootcamp-style workshop is designed to help you improve your teaching and understanding of these changes. Building on strategies\, structures\, and lessons learned\, we will explore active learning strategies to deepen your students’ understanding of crucial conceptual models and help you effectively implement a student-centered\, NGSS and NYS Regents-aligned approach tailored to physical science education. \nLed by expert and experienced Earth Science teachers\, you’ll walk away with ideas\, overviews\, specific actionable strategies\, field trip ideas\, and more! We are revising our lab workshops with the following in mind over 4 days this summer: \n\nDay 1 will focus on the three science investigations. We will start with an overview of the labs and have stations set up with the materials for all 3. Then we look at how we can implement the labs to be most successful in our classroom spaces.\nDay 2 will focus on problems of practice\, or grievances. We will be focusing on identifying areas that need some troubleshooting for the investigations\, curriculum development and implementation\, new literacy demands\, and any other topics you would like to discuss.\nDay 3 will focus on building solutions to our grievances. We will use the time to discuss solutions and have time to plan for their implementation. We will discuss curriculum pacing\, utilizing tools to support us in generating cluster question and utilizing literacy strategies in our classrooms to prepare our students for the increased literacy demands of the exam.\nDay 4 will focus on taking ourselves on a field trip to have a learning experience outside the classroom environment. We will think about how this trip connects to our curriculum and can be used to enrich our students’ learning. In this highly interactive workshop\, you will explore how to bring space science to life through dance and embodied learning. We are welcoming Joanne and Ruth (bios below) from the University of Lancashire in the UK who developed Into Our Skies: Space in Schools in a collaboration of astronomical research and dance. They will introduce you to the building blocks of dance and guide you through an engaging\, practical process that connects key scientific concepts (like motion\, gravity\, and celestial phenomena) to physical expression. You’ll be up and moving during the session\, experiencing the learning as your students would—while also having flexible ways to participate if movement is limited. \nDesigned for upper elementary and middle school classrooms\, this workshop requires no prior dance experience (for you or the students!)\, and models an inclusive\, cross-curricular approach that integrates science with the arts. You will develop strategies for implementing the Space in Schools curriculum\, and ideas for creating your own dance-based lessons and units about other subjects\, while considering how to make the movements and content accessible for all learners. I held a Hilary Lipsitz Research Fellowship at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) beginning in 2010\, where I conducted research on the progenitors of supernovae using the Hubble Space Telescope and contributed to the Museum’s after‑school education and public outreach programmes. This experience has shaped my long‑standing approach to engaging diverse audiences with cutting‑edge astronomy which I now continue at Alston Observatory in the UK. \nNow a Reader (Associate Professor) in Astrophysics at the University of Lancashire\, I combine internationally recognised research expertise in stellar explosions with over a decade of leadership in science communication. My astronomy research has spanned major international observatories and collaborations\, whilst the education project “Space in Schools” with Ruth has produced an award-winning (Times Higher Awards\, 2023) schools programme that adopts a cross-curricular approach to bring space science directly into the classroom and engage and inspire all pupils irrespective of ability or background. \nRuth Spencer (she/her) is a UK‑based dance artist\, educator\, and practitioner‑researcher with over 35 years of experience working across higher education\, elementary\, secondary\, and special education settings. I am a Senior Lecturer in Dance (equivalent to Associate Professor) at the University of Lancashire\, where my work focuses on creative pedagogy\, embodied learning\, and teacher professional development. \nI am a highly experienced and respected leader in UK dance education\, having designed and delivered creative arts programs\, teacher professional development (PD)\, and long‑term mentoring for educators across a wide range of school contexts. As teachers experience ways to engage students in talking about scientific phenomena in a summer lab-school setting\, they gain confidence and expertise to bring new strategies into their regular classroom setting. The powerful opportunity to listen closely to student conversations around science during a 2-week summer experience\, coupled with support from teacher mentors\, and program leaders has not only demonstrated changes and growth in student classroom discourse\, but created an active\, growing professional network and expanded STEMteachersNYC’s outreach to primary-grades. \nKey components of the KT3 approach\, which continues to be offered as part of the annual STEMteachersNYC Summer STEM Institute: \n\nAlignment with individual participants’ existing approaches and curriculum.\nA focus on facilitating the use of existing pedagogical expertise to transfer instructional strategies used to teach reading and writing to grade-appropriate science discussions.\nStrategies for teaching teachers to build increasingly student-led discourse.\nTwo-week summer Lab School Model + coaching and school year reunions.\n\nThe KT3 project also aims to extend discussion practices from YOUR high confidence subjects into all classroom subjects discussed & leveraging it as common thread/cross curricular glue in ELA & NGSS classrooms. \nThis summer\, the workshop will run over a two-week period\, some days virtual on Zoom\, some days in person at PS/MS 95 in the Bronx. Please plan to be available all 10 days of the workshop. This workshop will build on strategies and structures developed from other areas over the past two years\, and applied to the Physics labs. We will explore active learning strategies for deepening your student’s understanding of crucial conceptual models and help you effectively implement a student-centered\, NGSS and NYS Regents-aligned approach tailored to physical science education. \nIn this four-day workshop\, you will engage with each of the labs’ required experiments and activities. In the mornings of lab days\, you will mainly be in “student mode” where you will perform each in a small group\, as per the directions\, with analysis and reporting out. In the afternoon\, we will switch to “teacher mode” and you will discuss topics like how to implement that lab\, when and how to build it into your plan\, troubleshooting that may come up\, differentiation\, local requirements\, and modifications you can make. The 4th day will be focussed on discussions and on developing tools and strategies you can use in your classroom. This workshop will build on strategies and structures developed to explore the new labs in all four subjects over the past two years\, and explores active learning strategies for deepening your student’s understanding of crucial conceptual models and help you effectively implement a student-centered\, NGSS and NYS Regents-aligned approach tailored to physical science education. \nIn this four day workshop\, you will engage with each of the labs’ required experiments and activities. In the mornings\, you will mainly be in “student mode” where you will perform each in a small group\, as per the directions\, with analysis and reporting out. In the afternoon\, we will switch to “teacher mode” and you will discuss topics like how to implement that lab\, when and how to build it into your plan\, troubleshooting that may come up\, differentiation\, local requirements\, and modifications you can make. An additional day will be focussed on extra tools you can bring back to your classroom. Expect the following structure: \n\nDay 1 – Lab: Structures and Properties of Matter: The Fast and the Fragrant – Evaporation and Intermolecular Forces (PE: HS-PS1-3)\nDay 2 – Lab: Chemical Reactions: Just a Drop – Properties of Acids and Bases (PE: HS-PS1-11)\nDay 3 – Lab: Properties of Matter: Bend and Stretch – Structure and Function of Designed Materials (PE: HS-PS2-6)\nDay 4 – practical day with hands-on AI tools to help you create cluster questions\, homework sets\, and test prep\, PLUS a make-and-take activity so you can bring a class set of conductivity probes to your classroom.\n\n(The ordering of the lab days above is tentative\, and subject to change.) \nWe welcome all teachers and administrators\, both new and experienced\, to join us for this engaging workshop to help your students and you make the most of Regents Chemistry next year! \nWORKSHOP LEADER(S)\nSabrina Alkayfee has been teaching high school chemistry since 2019 at the Bronx River High School\, a Title I school in District 8. She has also taught Living Environment\, Forensics and Biology\, and is teaching in the district she grew up in (and can’t imagine herself anywhere else!). She considers herself a non-traditional teacher\, meaning that teaching chose her\, having majored in Chemistry at SUNY College at Old Westbury\, and receiving her Master’s in Education (Chemistry 7-12) from St. John’s University.  She is of Jamaican descent\, the biological mom of one\, and has fostered many children over the years (including one presently). Sabrina enjoys volunteering\, weight lifting\, and learning more about others\, and is the LGBTQ+ liaison and club advisor at her school. \nJessica Kim is a chemistry teacher at Aviation High School in NYC Public Schools with over a decade of experience and herself a product of NYC public schools. Her work is defined and informed by experience teaching in New York City and South Korea\, and research at Rockefeller University. Currently a candidate in the Stony Brook Education Leadership program\, Jessica brings a data-informed\, student-centered approach to STEM education and teacher development. \nKara Luce has been a teacher for 20+ years\, teaching in a variety of settings in multiple states. While she has taught everything from 7th grade math to honors Physics\, the one constant has always been chemistry. He serves as a workshop leader for STEMTeachersNYC and is passionate about helping both students and educators grow as learners. Outside the classroom\, Chris enjoys woodworking and spending time with his wife and two children. \nGreg Benedis-Grab is the Director of K-12 Computing and AI Initiatives at the University of Colorado Boulder. He is leading scaleup efforts of research developed curriculum materials and professional learning in STEM\, Computing and AI in districts across the U.S. He is also currently leading the K-12 Nexus for the NSF AI Education Institute for Student-AI Teaming (iSAT). Previously\, Greg worked in schools as a teacher and administrator for over 25 years. He has led professional learning sessions in Science\, STEM and CS globally. In 2010 he received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science & Mathematics Teaching from Barack Obama. SUMMARY:A “Turn-Key” Unit that Connects Climate Data to Daily Life
DESCRIPTION:A short free workshop for middle and high school teachers looking for ready-to-use\, standards-aligned instructional resources!\n\n\nKEY INFORMATION\n\nLOCATION: virtual on Zoom\nDATE & TIME: Thursday\, May 21\, 2026\, 5 – 6:30pm\nLED BY: Chris Link (full bio below)\nCTLE AVAILABLE: 1.5 hours\nTHIS WORKSHOP IS FOR: 6th – 11th grade teachers who are looking for ready-to-use\, standards-aligned instructional resources.\n\n  \nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION\nWhen climate patterns shift\, the effects don’t stop at the front door. This session explores what happens when they come inside. \nClimate Variability and Human Health is a free\, turn-key unit for grades 6-8 (with clear pathways to scale up to high school) that helps students investigate how changes in climate patterns lead to flooding\, wildfires\, and increased pests\, and what those events mean for the health of the people inside affected homes. The unit follows Mira\, a middle schooler who notices weather shocks affecting people she loves across the country: flooding in Florida\, tick propagation in Minnesota\, wildfire smoke in Oregon. Through case studies\, data analysis\, and CER (Claim-Evidence-Reasoning) activities\, students trace cause-and-effect relationships from shifting climate patterns to regional weather events to real health impacts\, and explore prevention and mitigation strategies they can act on. \nIn this 90-minute session\, participants experience the Wildfires weather shock as students would: reading the Portland case study\, analyzing EPA and Our World in Data wildfire trend data\, exploring how smoke infiltrates homes\, and constructing a CER response. We then discuss the pedagogical moves behind the sequence and how to facilitate it in your own classroom. \nParticipants leave with the complete unit (free\, immediately via Google Drive)\, a replicable model for case-based climate education\, and concrete strategies for integrating causal reasoning and data analysis into existing science or EE programming at the middle or high school level. \nNo special materials or prior experience required. The session is virtual – please plan to join on a laptop or tablet (strongly preferred over joining on your phone) to easily access the session and materials. \nThis workshop is geared towards middle and high school teachers. We are also offering a similar workshop on indoor air quality geared towards upper elementary teachers on May 14th – Teaching Indoor Indoor Air Quality for Elementary Students. \n  \nWORKSHOP LEADER\nChris Link is a learning design specialist and education consultant with 16 years of experience leading curriculum design\, professional development\, and instructional systems across public school districts\, national nonprofits\, and edtech organizations. To ground our work\, we’ll explore examples from a high school biology class that examine (1) how identity influences who participates in science—and how findings can inform more inclusive classrooms and schools—and (2) how Indigenous land management practices impact conservation outcomes. While these examples anchor the session\, the strategies you’ll learn are flexible and will equip students to read\, analyze\, and engage with articles on any topic. \nThe approach is highly flexible and requires no prior prep for students to begin engaging with journal articles. Use it as a whole-class activity or empower individuals and small groups to lead peer “journal clubs” around topics of interest—whether for curiosity\, research\, or competition. We invite you to join us for a morning walk in Manhattan’s Central Park\, an urban oasis for birds as well as people. Each spring\, Central Park becomes a global birding hot spot! Thousands of colorful songbirds migrating from the tropics stop in the park each day in September and October to refuel on insects before continuing north toward their breeding grounds. \nTake a leisurely walk with us through the north end of the park. While there is never a guarantee of what we will see\, expect to see flycatchers\, warblers\, thrushes\, raptors and more\, and we will search for rarities amongst them. Learn about behaviors and how to use guides\, apps\, and your eyes and ears to identify the birds we’ll see. Rain or shine the birds will be in the park\, but if it’s raining too much we will postpone. Bring walking footwear\, binoculars\, a camera with a good telephoto lens if you have one\, and water (/coffee). After an introduction\, including classroom-friendly materials\, we will start walking and watching. Don’t be late! We will set out 9:00am sharp. \nNOTE: This is a fully outdoor event. During the workshop\, you will experience a model lesson from the student perspective\, dig into the unit’s ready-to-use materials\, and discuss strategies for integrating indoor environmental health into existing elementary science instruction. The unit culminates in a design thinking challenge where students apply what they have learned to improve their own indoor environments. \nBy the end of the session\, you will leave with a clear picture of how to implement the unit within limited instructional time\, confidence in teaching indoor environmental health concepts\, and strategies for building student action competence so young learners feel empowered to make real changes at home. You will also leave with immediate access to a complete Google Drive-based resource aligned to NGSS. \nNo prior experience with environmental health content is needed. \nThe session is virtual – please plan to join on a laptop or tablet (strongly preferred over joining on your phone) to easily access the session and materials. \nThis workshop is geared towards upper elementary students. DESCRIPTION:Hands-on experience with the new NYS Regents Labs for Chemistry teachers!\n\n\nKEY INFORMATION\n\nDate/Time: Saturday\, March 7\, 2026 from 9am – 3pm\nLocation: CUNY City College of NY\, North Academic Center (exact room will be emailed to participants)\nWorkshop Leader: Sabrina Alkayfee & Jessica Kim (bios below)\nAppropriate for: NYS Regents chemistry teachers\, and those who support them.\n6hrs of CTLE credit offered\n\nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION\nThe NYS Regents Chemistry labs have just been introduced\, and we want to help you learn them. This workshop will build on strategies and structures that worked well for out Life Science series last year\, and explores active learning strategies for deepening your student’s understanding of crucial conceptual models and help you effectively implement a student-centered\, NGSS and NYS Regents-aligned approach tailored to physical science education. To do this\, you will engage with the required experiments and activities designed to help students build a critical understanding of these models. \nOn January 25th\, 2026\, we will run the third in the series\, the Chemical Reactions: Just a Drop – Properties of Acids and Bases (PE: HS-PS1-11) lab. \nYou will work in both “student mode” and “teacher mode” so you can experience the lab through both lenses\, and add practical tools to your teacher toolbox. We will include structured discussions about the new changes in the New York State Regents curriculum and test\, strategies for accommodating district-specific curricular requirements\, various student populations\, laboratory resources\, and more. \nWe welcome all teachers and administrators\, both new and experienced\, to join us for this engaging workshop! \nWORKSHOP LEADERS\nSabrina Alkayfee has been teaching high school chemistry since 2019 at the Bronx River High School\, a Title I school in District 8. She has also taught Living Environment\, Forensics and Biology\, and is teaching in the district she grew up in (and can’t image herself anywhere else!). She considers herself a non-traditional teacher\, meaning that teaching chose her\, having majored in Chemistry at SUNY College at Old Westbury\, and receiving her Master’s in Education (Chemistry 7-12) from St. John’s University. To do this\, you will engage with the state-required experiments and activities designed to help students build a critical understanding of these models. \nIn this workshop\, we will run the Space Systems: Unearthing Mars – A Historical Perspective (PE: HS-ESS1-4). You will work in both “student mode” and “teacher mode” so you can experience the lab through both lenses\, and add practical tools to your teacher toolbox. We will include structured discussions about the new changes in the New York State Regents curriculum and test\, strategies for accommodating district-specific curricular requirements\, various student populations\, laboratory resources\, what changes you can (and cannot!) make to the lab\, and more. We welcome all teachers and administrators\, both new and experienced\, to join us for this engaging workshop! \nThis is part of a series in which we are running each of the 3 labs during the school year: \n\nEarlier in the fall\, we ran the Sky’s the Limit lab.\nOn Jan 31\, we are running the Ripple Effect lab – information here.\nOn March 7\, we are running the Unearthing Mars lab (this ticket)\n\nWORKSHOP LEADERS\nKristina Coker is in her 9th year of teaching Earth Science at Midwood High School in Brooklyn. She is a Math for America Master Teacher and Mentor Teacher for the MAT program at the American Museum of Natural History. Kristina enjoys developing new dynamic elective classes\, like Space Engineers and advising the Dungeons and Dragons club at her school. \nLiza Backman is in her 8th year of teaching high school science\, and her 5th year of teaching at the Urban Assembly Institute of Math and Science for Young Women (UAI). She earned her B.A. in Chemistry and Geology from the College of Wooster\, her M.A.T. in Earth Science Education from the Richard Gilder Graduate School at the American Museum of Natural History\, an advanced certificate in Teaching Students with Disabilities from Relay Graduate School of Education\, and holds additional NYS teaching certifications in Chemistry and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. What are all these questions for? How do teachers come up with all these questions in the first place? What strategies are used for coming up with questions in the moment that are responsive to student thinking? In what ways do these questions cultivate curiosity\, foster dialogue\, and build your students’ science identities? \nAt its heart\, crafting high-quality questions and knowing when to use them is a difficult skill to master. In this workshop\, we will begin to explore the tip of this skill iceberg by examining the various questioning models\, tactics\, and mindsets that exist. We will explore the anatomy of a question\, how the anatomy of a question can promote different thought actions in students\, and explore different frameworks with which to analyze questions. We will then conclude with time to practice questions on the fly! Concentrating on The Ripple Effect lab.\n\n\nKEY INFORMATION\n\nDate/Time: Saturday\, January 31\, 2026\, from 9am – 3pm\nLocation: City College of NY\, NAC Building\nWorkshop Leader: Kristina Coker and Liza Blackman (bio(s) below)\nAppropriate for: NYS Regents Earth Science teachers\, and those who support them.\n6hrs of CTLE credit offered\n\nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION\nThe NYS Regents Earth Science labs were introduced in 2024\, and we want to help you learn them! This workshop builds on strategies and structures we have been using with all four of the Regents Science\, and explores active learning strategies for deepening your students’ understanding of crucial conceptual models and help you effectively implement a student-centered\, NGSS and NYS Regents-aligned approach tailored to physical science education. To do this\, you will engage with the state-required experiments and activities designed to help students build a critical understanding of these models. \nIn this workshop\, we will run the Earth’s Systems: The Ripple Effect – The Work of Water Across New York State Surfaces (PE: HS-ESS2-5). You will work in both “student mode” and “teacher mode” so you can experience the lab through both lenses\, and add practical tools to your teacher toolbox. We will include structured discussions about the new changes in the New York State Regents curriculum and test\, strategies for accommodating district-specific curricular requirements\, various student populations\, laboratory resources\, what changes you can (and cannot!) make to the lab\, and more. Kristina enjoys developing new dynamic elective classes\, like Space Engineers and advising the Dungeons and Dragons club at her school. \nLiza Backman is in her 8th year of teaching high school science\, and her 5th year of teaching at the Urban Assembly Institute of Math and Science for Young Women (UAI). She earned her B.A. in Chemistry and Geology from the College of Wooster\, her M.A.T. in Earth Science Education from the Richard Gilder Graduate School at the American Museum of Natural History\, an advanced certificate in Teaching Students with Disabilities from Relay Graduate School of Education\, and holds additional NYS teaching certifications in Chemistry and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. This workshop will build on strategies and structures that worked well for our Life Science series last year\, and explores active learning strategies for deepening your student’s understanding of crucial conceptual models and help you effectively implement a student-centered\, NGSS and NYS Regents-aligned approach tailored to physical science education. To do this\, you will engage with the required experiments and activities designed to help students build a critical understanding of these models. \nIn this workshop\, the second in a series for all 3 labs\, we will run the Forces and Interactions: Induction Junction – What is your Function? (PE: HS-PS2-5) lab. \nAdditionally\, participants will engage in both “student mode” and “teacher mode” so that they can experience these activities through both lenses and add practical tools to the teacher toolbox.
