SUMMARY:STEP UP Physics Together Regional Networking + Coding Physics Simulations!
DESCRIPTION:STEP UP: Physics Together coffee hour followed by a “Coding Physics Simulations” professional learning workshop! AND EQUIPMENT GIVEAWAY!\n\n\nNETWORKING + EQUIPMENT GIVEAWAY + CODING PHYSICS SIMS WORKSHOP! \n  \nSTEP UP: Physics Together will host a coffee hour (9-10am) before the physics workshop. All workshop participants are invited to join us for coffee\, juice and donuts. Learn more about STEP UP\, connect or reconnect with STEP UP Advocates and enjoy the company of other science teachers! \nSTEP UP is a national community of physics teachers\, researchers\, and professional societies. We design high school physics lessons to empower teachers\, create cultural change\, and inspire young women to pursue physics in college. STEP UP Advocates are teachers of physics working to inspire young women to pursue physics in their classrooms. There are approximately 60 STEP UP Advocates in the NYC region and STEP UP will open up applications for additional Advocates soon. Our Advocates are on the front lines of improving gender equity in physics! You can learn more about STEP UP here: https://engage.aps.org/stepup/home \n  \nIntroduction to Coding Physics Simulations for Teachers! with Paul Feffer \nIn this professional development workshop for teachers\, we will learn the basics of the JavaScript programming language within the p5.js environment with a focus on constructing physics simulations. Javascript is one of the most popular programming languages today which is used for web app development and desktop and mobile applications. p5.js is a JavaScript library of “tools” designed for creative coding with easy access to graphics and animation. These capabilities make p5.js ideal for physics teachers with little or no programming experience to start coding physics simulations! \nWhile three hours is hardly enough time for the briefest of introductions\, you will learn enough to get started and to find resources to continue your journey. As we cover some basic programming concepts\, you will code simulations for objects (1) moving at constant velocity\, (2) accelerating under the influence of a net force such as gravity\, allowing us to simulate projectile motion\, and (3) oscillating under a linear restoring force (a.k.a. a spring). As time permits\, we may also explore simulating orbital dynamics\, and how to use “leapfrog” integration to ensure a stable oscillatory motion that conserves energy. \n  \nCost: $25 (Limited # of tickets!) \nSTEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching\, since 2011. They cultivate curiosity\, foster dialogue\, and build science identity!\n\n\nLed by: Chris Resch \nDate: Mar 9\, 2024\, 11:00am-2:00pm ET\, via Zoom \nInspired by our popular Socratic Dialogue\, we now bring you “Socratic Dialogue: Teacher Edition!”  \nOn average\, teachers ask 400 questions per day\, or roughly 70\,000 questions per year. What are all these questions for? DESCRIPTION:Strategies\, scaffolds\, and sample student work to explore how we help students communicate and tell the story of their research! \n\n\nScientific Communication – Telling the Story of Your Research! \nA Professional Learning Workshop for Solve for Tomorrow Teams \nMarch 2\, 2024 via Zoom (11:00am-2:00pm ET) \nLed by Eric Walters\, Tracy LaGrassa\, Allison Mayle and Jason Sullivan \n  \nHow do we convince others of the significance of our research? In this 3hr professional learning workshop we will look at strategies\, scaffolds\, and sample student work to explore how we have students write proposals and drafts\, and engage in peer review; how students generate a quad chart/mini-poster to report what they did and how and why they did it\, showing they understand not only their experiment\, but also the rationale behind their experiment and where it fits into the bigger picture. Content will be adapted to the needs and experience of participants.  \n  \nDuring the workshop we will look at various rubrics and toolkits for translating student research and projects into clear and captivating stories in various formats\, including oral presentations\, written scientific papers\, magazine-style writing\, expo tri-folds or posters\, podcasts\, and more.   \n  \nThere are many sciences\, many ways to communicate\, and many audiences to communicate to! With the understanding that participating teachers may also be at different points in their respective students’ research or project timelines\, and have different target communication products\, we will be inviting you to share a bit of detail about your project or research\, your target audience and ideal product\, in order to better tailor the workshop experience to your needs.  \nThis March 2 workshop is open to Samsung Solve for Tomorrow teachers.
