SUMMARY:FREE Climate Game Day for Teachers! Ekos\, Energetic & More!
DESCRIPTION:Learn to mitigate climate change through classroom-ready games! Learn to play Ekos\, Energetic\, and more! Everyone will take home a game!\n\n\nMany thanks to ConEd for ongoing support of our ClimateSTEM Series! \nJoin us in-person April 13\, for a day of learning to play classroom friendly Climate Change simulation and solutioning games! We will be joined by some of the game creators\, and game sets will be raffled! \nYour own middle and/or high schooler children (not your students) are welcome to join us – please email yadana@stemteachersnyc.org to let us know! \n  \nEkos \nIt is the near future in the City of Ekos. The planet is rapidly urbanizing\, placing tremendous pressure on cities and urban areas to provide good living conditions for the majority of humanity…\nA group of community members must come together to design and build a network of resilient systems\, and envision a more equitable and sustainable Ekos in the face of climate change and other challenges. As one of six actors — a City Council Speaker\, City Planner\, Community Organizer\, Ecologist\, Designer\, and Modeler — it is your mission to use resources wisely\, collaborate with others and improve the adaptive capacity of your systems against extreme events like heat waves\, floods\, power outages and pandemics. \nTo win\, players must use systems thinking and explore concepts of resilience to collaborate\, problem solve\, and envision just urban futures. \nVisit https://www.ekosgame.com for more details. \n  \nEnergetic \nDecarbonize New York City with the game of Energetic! \nSee the scope of change and cooperation needed to transform the city’s energy demand & supply in time to meet goals for the Paris Agreement. \nWe designed a board game about the future of New York City! Energetic is a cooperative team challenge in which you work to decarbonize New York City by building 16 GW of carbon neutral power by 2035. Each player is given the chance to see the scope of change and cooperation needed to transform the city’s energy demand and supply in time to meet goals for the Paris Agreement. Energetic is used as part of climate courses at Carnegie Mellon\, Vanderbilt\, Bronx Science\, and Hunter College HS\, as well as at other universities and high schools. At this workshop we will hear from teachers that use the game\, and then we will try it ourselves! Can we keep the lights on in NYC in 2035? \nMatt S. – I used the game in my physics class as a potential end project for students to engage with. The physics ideas of gigawatts and the attributes of energy sources were embedded in the context of decision making. The game itself is essentially a model\, and NGSS connections to the science practices standards related to the crosscutting concept of science and society are well aligned with the game. \nNGSS Science and Engineering Practices: \n\nDevelop and/or use a model (including mathematical and computational) to generate data to support explanations\, predict phenomena\, analyze systems\, and/or solve problems.\n\nNew York State: \n\nScience and Engineering Practices: HS-PS1-1: Use a model to predict the relationships between systems or between components of a system.\nEngineering Design: HS-ETS1-1: Analyze a major global challenge to specify qualitative and quantitative criteria and constraints for solutions that account for societal needs and wants.”\n\nVisit Energetic to find out more and order your own set. \n  \nCost: FREE. Game sets will be raffled off to participants. You must attend to be in the running! Our ClimateSTEM Series is supported by ConEd. \n  \nSTEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching\, since 2011. All workshops over 2hrs offer CTLE. CUNY Pre-service teachers may attend for free. Please reach out if your school requires an invoice. We are an NYCDOE MTAC Vendor. \n

SUMMARY:STEP UP Physics Together Regional Networking + Coding Physics Simulations!
DESCRIPTION:STEP UP: Physics Together coffee hour followed by a “Coding Physics Simulations” professional learning workshop! AND EQUIPMENT GIVEAWAY!\n\n\nNETWORKING + EQUIPMENT GIVEAWAY + CODING PHYSICS SIMS WORKSHOP! \n  \nSTEP UP: Physics Together will host a coffee hour (9-10am) before the physics workshop. All workshop participants are invited to join us for coffee\, juice and donuts. Learn more about STEP UP\, connect or reconnect with STEP UP Advocates and enjoy the company of other science teachers! \nSTEP UP is a national community of physics teachers\, researchers\, and professional societies. We design high school physics lessons to empower teachers\, create cultural change\, and inspire young women to pursue physics in college. STEP UP Advocates are teachers of physics working to inspire young women to pursue physics in their classrooms. There are approximately 60 STEP UP Advocates in the NYC region and STEP UP will open up applications for additional Advocates soon. Our Advocates are on the front lines of improving gender equity in physics! You can learn more about STEP UP here: https://engage.aps.org/stepup/home \n  \nIntroduction to Coding Physics Simulations for Teachers! with Paul Feffer \nIn this professional development workshop for teachers\, we will learn the basics of the JavaScript programming language within the p5.js environment with a focus on constructing physics simulations. Javascript is one of the most popular programming languages today which is used for web app development and desktop and mobile applications. p5.js is a JavaScript library of “tools” designed for creative coding with easy access to graphics and animation. These capabilities make p5.js ideal for physics teachers with little or no programming experience to start coding physics simulations! \nWhile three hours is hardly enough time for the briefest of introductions\, you will learn enough to get started and to find resources to continue your journey. As we cover some basic programming concepts\, you will code simulations for objects (1) moving at constant velocity\, (2) accelerating under the influence of a net force such as gravity\, allowing us to simulate projectile motion\, and (3) oscillating under a linear restoring force (a.k.a. a spring). As time permits\, we may also explore simulating orbital dynamics\, and how to use “leapfrog” integration to ensure a stable oscillatory motion that conserves energy. \n  \nCost: $25 (Limited # of tickets!) \nSTEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching\, since 2011. All workshops over 2hrs offer CTLE. CUNY Pre-service teachers may attend for free. Please reach out if your school requires an invoice. We are an NYCDOE MTAC Vendor. \n

SUMMARY:Socratic Dialogue: For Teachers! (ALL GRADES)
DESCRIPTION:Teachers ask 400 questions per day or 70\,000 questions per year! They cultivate curiosity\, foster dialogue\, and build science identity!\n\n\nLed by: Chris Resch \nDate: Mar 9\, 2024\, 11:00am-2:00pm ET\, via Zoom \nInspired by our popular Socratic Dialogue\, we now bring you “Socratic Dialogue: Teacher Edition!”  \nOn average\, teachers ask 400 questions per day\, or roughly 70\,000 questions per year. What are all these questions for? How do teachers come up with all these questions in the first place?  What strategies are used for coming up with questions in the moment that are responsive to student thinking?  In what ways do these questions cultivate curiosity\, foster dialogue\, and build your students’ science identities?  \nAt its heart\, crafting high-quality questions and knowing when to use them is a difficult skill to master.  In this workshop\, we will begin to explore the tip of this skill iceberg by examining the various questioning models\, tactics\, and mindsets that exist.  We will explore the anatomy of a question\, how the anatomy of a question can promote different thought actions in students\, and explore different frameworks with which to analyze questions.  We will then conclude with time to practice questions on the fly!  Join us for a workshop that will help you refine your Socratic questioning skills to inspire and co-generate thinking with your students! \nCost: (Limited # of tickets!) $25 per person to reserve your spot. \nSTEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching\, since 2011. All workshops over 2hrs offer CTLE. CUNY Pre-service teachers may attend for free. Please reach out if your school requires an invoice. We are an NYCDOE MTAC Vendor.

SUMMARY:Scientific Communication: Helping Students Tell the Story of Their Research
DESCRIPTION:Strategies\, scaffolds\, and sample student work to explore how we help students communicate and tell the story of their research! \n\n\nScientific Communication – Telling the Story of Your Research! \nA Professional Learning Workshop for Solve for Tomorrow Teams \nMarch 2\, 2024 via Zoom (11:00am-2:00pm ET) \nLed by Eric Walters\, Tracy LaGrassa\, Allison Mayle and Jason Sullivan \n  \nHow do we convince others of the significance of our research? In this 3hr professional learning workshop we will look at strategies\, scaffolds\, and sample student work to explore how we have students write proposals and drafts\, and engage in peer review; how students generate a quad chart/mini-poster to report what they did and how and why they did it\, showing they understand not only their experiment\, but also the rationale behind their experiment and where it fits into the bigger picture. Content will be adapted to the needs and experience of participants.  \n  \nDuring the workshop we will look at various rubrics and toolkits for translating student research and projects into clear and captivating stories in various formats\, including oral presentations\, written scientific papers\, magazine-style writing\, expo tri-folds or posters\, podcasts\, and more.   \n  \nThere are many sciences\, many ways to communicate\, and many audiences to communicate to! With the understanding that participating teachers may also be at different points in their respective students’ research or project timelines\, and have different target communication products\, we will be inviting you to share a bit of detail about your project or research\, your target audience and ideal product\, in order to better tailor the workshop experience to your needs.  \nThis March 2 workshop is open to Samsung Solve for Tomorrow teachers. Please reach out for additional dates if/when the workshop will be offered again.
