SUMMARY:Introduction to Assessment and Standards Based Grading (MS/HS)
DESCRIPTION:For a limited time only\, we’re offering a 25% discount on our summer workshops. Use code SummerSTEMFLASH25 at checkout and let the STEM adventure begin!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis three-day workshop will guide you through the steps to set up your classes for standards-based grading.\n\n\nLeaders: Manjula Nair\, Sharona Kahn\, and Mark Schober \nDates: Aug 14-16\, 2023 (9:00-3:00pm EDT\, via Zoom) \nAbout the Workshop \nThe leaders worked… “as a great team to take a group of folks who were all over the place in their views on SBG to push ourselves to be better teachers.” “LOVED it! It was very well organized and seemed perfectly scaffolded for helping me as a newbie.” \nWhat do you want students to know and be able to do when they leave your course? How do you communicate these objectives to your students clearly? How do you design instruction and provide feedback that helps students to meet your goals? By critically examining how we assess student work\, we can improve instruction\, student attitudes towards learning\, and equity in grading. “Standards-Based Grading” provides students itemized feedback according to your course learning objectives. Students are then better able to know what they understand and what concepts need further practice and reassessment. In short\, SBG encourages a growth-mindset\, practice-until-you-succeed approach to learning. \nThe workshop\, tailored to middle and upper school STEM teachers\, guides you through an incremental adoption of SBG practices\, provides sample learning standards\, assessments\, and gradebooks\, and gives you structured time and feedback for tailoring these tools for your own classes. Throughout\, we will consider how to make an effective assessment strategy that is an integral part of a cyclical learning process. If at all possible\, attend with a colleague! \n \nCost: (Limited # of tickets!) \nEarly Bird $165 \nRegular Teacher Price $210 \nSchool Price $300 \nSTEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching\, since 2011. You will leave with ideas for organizing class-wide parent updates\, improving conversations with individual parents\, and holding efficient and productive conferences\, as well as setting boundaries that respect your time and class policies. \nPart 2: Self-running Classrooms \nMake your job easier by setting up your teaching space and designing procedures (for yourself and students) that are intuitive and make routines easy. Join us to share and learn strategies for making your class predictable and manageable for your students\, from organizing materials\, to writing classroom rules and behavioral policies\, to assigning roles to delegate responsibilities. \nPart 3: Sustainable Systems \nYour time and energy are limited\, so it’s worth investing some time now into creating systems that will keep your schedule on track and your head clear. In this session\, we’ll discuss ways of managing your papers\, establishing your weekly work/life balance\, onboarding new parents\, and focusing students through transitions\, so that you achieve a sustainable work routine. \nPart 4: Homework \nHomework is a vital part of the learning process for many students\, but it can be a challenge to stay on top of – not to mention getting students (and parents) to see the purpose of the work you assign. Use code SummerSTEMFLASH25 at checkout and let the STEM adventure begin!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTired of doing cookbook style science labs with your students? Would you like to engage your students in real\, student-driven research!\n\n\nLeaders: Tracy LaGrassa and JoAnn Gensert \nDates: FOUR AFTERNOONS – July 12\, 13\, 18 & 19\, 2023 (2:00-4:00pm EDT\,@The Manne Institute at The Bronx High School of Science) \nAbout the Workshop \nTurn your science classroom into a research lab! \nDescription: Are you tired of cookbook-style science labs? Would you like to engage your students in real\, student-driven independent research projects? Engaging high school and middle school students in the authentic research process stirs their curiosity and promotes creativity\, while introducing them to how science is done. \nIn this workshop\, we will model and share resources that teach students how to develop testable research questions\, design and execute their own rigorous experiments to answer those questions\, use statistics to analyze their results and present their data. Follow-up meetups will provide a space for reflecting on- and refining- your process of turning your science classroom into a research lab! \nIn this workshop participants will put on their student-hats and dig into one or more of the follow models: \n\n*Exercise physiology (respiration rate\, lung volume\, heart rate)\,\n*Psychology (Stroop test)\,\n*Animal behavior experiments (pill bugs).\n\nAdditional time in the workshop will focus on assessing student progress in a research course. Participants will learn to scaffold each aspect of the scientific process with mini-lessons. We also will look at strategies\, scaffolds\, and sample student work to explore how we: \n\n*Have students write proposals and drafts\, and engage in peer review.\n*How students generate a quad chart/mini-poster to report what they did and how and why they did it\, showing they understand not only their experiment\, but also the rationale behind their experiment and where it fits into the bigger picture.\n\nContent will be adapted to the needs and experience of participants. \n \nCost:  $82.50-$150.00 (Limited # of tickets!) \nSTEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching\, since 2011. SUMMARY:Foundations in Student-Centered\, Models-Based High School Physics (HS)
DESCRIPTION:For a limited time only\, we’re offering a 25% discount on our summer workshops. Use code SummerSTEMFLASH25 at checkout and let the STEM adventure begin!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDorms-Summer-STEM-Institute-2023Download\n\n\n9 day workshop\, all in-person at Storm King. Master hands-on\, student-centered\, models-based lessons & units and create your own!\n\n\nLeaders: Paul Feffer \nDates: \nWeek 1: July 5-8\, 2023 (9:00-3:00pm EDT/NOTE! Includes Saturday!) \nWeek 2: July 10-14\, 2023 (9:00-3:00pm EDT) \nAdditional hours will be offered over Zoom to support implementation. \nNOTE: Workshop takes place in-person at the Storm King School. *Room and board is available – please email info@stemteachersnyc.org for more information!* View Storm King Campus Info sheet here! \nParticipants register for two Weeks (9 days). Week 1 will include the pedagogy introduction\, scientific methods\, 1-D kinematics\, and Newton’s Laws\, and Week 2 will cover 2-D kinematics\, energy\, and momentum. \nFoundations in Student-Centered\, Models-Based Mechanics for High School Physics (HS) \nAbout the Workshop: \nActive and pre-service physics teachers\, join us this summer to develop your skills and learn ways to engage your students in a student-centered\, model-based\, curricular approach that will deepen their understanding of core physics concepts. \nAs a participant\, you will observe instruction from a student perspective (“student mode”) as you conduct lab activities that are central to each unit and which are ready for your own classroom. Alternating between student- and teacher-mode\, we will discuss the pedagogical rationale behind each activity\, and strategies for adapting to various student populations and classroom resources. The materials and techniques in this workshop are all directly useful in the NYS Regents Physics Curriculum and in most other intro-level high school physics courses\, including the AP Physics 1 curriculum. The activities emphasize depth over breadth; as a result\, they cover many\, but not by any means all\, of the topics in the Regents Physics and most other intro curricula. \nThe workshop will focus on fundamental physics mechanics concepts including kinematics (constant velocity and uniform acceleration)\, dynamics (Newton’s Laws)\, circular motion\, and the conserved quantities momentum and energy. The models we will navigate are comprised of descriptive\, diagrammatic\, graphical\, and algebraic representations\, which are developed through observation\, experimentation\, and reflection\, and “deployed” through prediction and verification. The constructivist process we will explore encourages student teamwork and active\, productive discussion\, not just with the teacher\, but with fellow classmates. \nIf you are a pre-service physics teacher\, this workshop will help you prepare for your first year teaching an algebra-based intro physics course. If you are an experienced physics teacher accustomed to a traditional textbook/lecture approach\, this workshop may give you new ideas for presenting concepts and encouraging a hands-on\, collaborative\, classroom culture. \n\n Cost: (Limited # of tickets!) \nEarly Bird $220-495 \nRegular Teacher Price $280-630 \nSchool Price $400-9000 \nSTEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching\, since 2011.
