Join Kerry Kline as she models how she runs her regular journal clubs with her students.\n\n\nDeconstructed Journal Clubs \nApril 5 \, 2025 | 10am-1pm \nLed by Kerry Kline \nDeconstructed Journal Clubs: a student-centered approach to decoding journal articles while also providing students opportunities to explore any topic of choice. This workshop will focus on articles that explore 1–how identity impacts who does science and how to use results to make changes within the classroom or school to be more inclusive\, and 2–how Indigenous land management impacts conservation outcomes. \nDeconstructed Journal Clubs are quite flexible! Depending on time\, students can come to class without prepping in any way before coming to class. Or\, if you prefer\, they can learn to lead their fellow students in a “club” with articles of your (or their) choosing. Students can practice a range of skills\, or a targeted subset\, all in service of building scientific literacy. By using regular\, dedicated time\, student confidence and ability to analyze data and figures noticeably improves. Depending on how you approach these clubs\, students can also practice making predictions (what do you think the experimental set up will be? How will researchers test their ideas?) and using data to solve problems. \nAudience: Middle School & Upper School Teachers of any science discipline. Articles used were developed for a biology class\, however\, the technique is valid for all science fields.

Part 1 – Moving from phenomena to testable questions.\n\n\nLeaders: Tracy LaGrassa\, Jason Sullivan \nDeveloping Testable Questions – Oct 27\, 2:00-4:30pm ET via Zoom \nDescription: Are you tired of cookbook-style science labs? Would you like to engage your students in real\, student-driven independent research projects? Engaging high school and middle school students in the authentic research process stirs their curiosity and promotes creativity\, while introducing them to how science is done. \nIn this workshop\, we will model and share resources that teach students how to develop testable research questions\, design and execute their own rigorous experiments to answer those questions\, use statistics to analyze their results and present their data. Follow-up meetups will provide a space for reflecting on- and refining- your process of turning your science classroom into a research lab! In this workshop participants will put on their student-hats and dig into several phenomenon/experimental models and participants will learn to scaffold each aspect of the scientific process with mini-lessons. \nParticipants will be encouraged to bring student questions! \n \nJoin us in spring! Use computational thinking and apply programming to real world scenarios and interdisciplinary examples from real world classrooms! Abstraction\, Logic\, Evaluation and more – the concepts and approaches of computational thinking can help students think through and tackle projects and problems\, and to work as a team and communicate solutions. Computation has become an integral part of every scientific field. Today’s scientists leverage computational tools\, use computation as a model for thinking\, conduct their investigations with computation and often must contribute to the design of the computational tools for their specific research. The NGSS emphasize the role of authentic professional practices in teaching science. One of the eight practices is computational thinking. \nOver the course of this two-day workshop participants will engage with practical tools and pedagogical approaches developed by Cornell Tech’s TIR teachers and STEMteachersNYC\, to adapt and incorporate the Barefoot Computing Framework of computational thinking concepts and skills into your existing curriculum and your school’s long term goals. \n  \nOUTCOMES \n\nStrengthen your school community & expand your professional network.\nEngage in cutting edge\, easily implemented strategies to scaffold Computational Thinking into your teaching.\nParticipants will be offered ongoing support by the STEMteachersNYC team.\n\nCurricular alignment (3-8 public) – Aligns with 3-8 EngageNY ELA and Math Curriculum. DESCRIPTION:Develop your skills and learn ways to engage your students in a student-centered\, model-based approach to deepen understanding of physics!\n\n\nLeaders: Paul Feffer \nDates: July 8-12\, 2024 (9:00-3:00pm) in person at Trinity School \nFoundations in Student-Centered\, Models-Based Mechanics for High School Physics (HS) \n  \nAbout the Workshop: \nActive and pre-service physics teachers\, join us this summer to develop your skills and learn ways to engage your students in a student-centered\, model-based\, curricular approach that will deepen their understanding of core physics concepts. \nAs a participant\, you will observe instruction from a student perspective (“student mode”) as you conduct lab activities that are central to each unit and which are ready for your own classroom. Alternating between student- and teacher-mode\, we will discuss the pedagogical rationale behind each activity\, and strategies for adapting to various student populations and classroom resources. The materials and techniques in this workshop are all directly useful in the NYS Regents Physics Curriculum and in most other intro-level high school physics courses\, including the AP Physics 1 curriculum. The activities emphasize depth over breadth; as a result\, they cover many\, but not by any means all\, of the topics in the Regents Physics and most other intro curricula. \nThe workshop will focus on fundamental physics mechanics concepts including kinematics (constant velocity and uniform acceleration)\, dynamics (Newton’s Laws)\, circular motion\, and the conserved quantities momentum and energy. The models we will navigate are comprised of descriptive\, diagrammatic\, graphical\, and algebraic representations\, which are developed through observation\, experimentation\, and reflection\, and “deployed” through prediction and verification. The constructivist process we will explore encourages student teamwork and active\, productive discussion\, not just with the teacher\, but with fellow classmates. \nIf you are a pre-service physics teacher\, this workshop will help you prepare for your first year teaching an algebra-based intro physics course. SUMMARY:Sustainable Maker Cultures in the K-8 Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Learn to mitigate climate change through classroom-ready games! Learn to play Ekos\, Energetic\, and more! Everyone will take home a game!\n\n\nMany thanks to ConEd for ongoing support of our ClimateSTEM Series! \nOur students use a variety of multimedia to share/report data including Scratch\, movie presentations\, micro bits\, to create game boards or upcycling materials. Our students use data to compose arguments\, create infographics\, and tell stories. \n  \nThis workshop will focus on adopting the Circular Maker Space approach. In our talk\, we share our experience about not having our own dedicated Maker Space\, with limited budget. Some of our initial maker projects generated a lot of waste and eventually some of them ended up in the garbage. Keeping the Sustainable Development Goals in mind\, we look into how we can utilize maker spaces to reduce waste and build resilience. Some ideas include virtual maker space to teach engineering design and engaging students in meaningful projects that instills a sense of community responsibility. \n  \nCost: FREE. Game sets will be raffled off to participants. You must attend to be in the running!
