Work with supportive\, experienced\, mentors and a community of colleagues\, to plan for and debrief the new labs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nThis summer we held a sold-out\, one-week\, professional learning workshop focused on the new Life Science Regents Labs. Based on what we learned from our teacher-participants\, Chris Resch and a team of experienced teachers and teacher-leaders will host three in-person lab workshops\, and four virtual planning sessions over the 2024-2025 school year. \nLife Science education is often associated with memorization. But does it have to be? The Life Sciences is a subject rich in anchoring models that all tie together and build off each other and create a rich story of interactions and scale! Recent shifts in pedagogical research\, NGSS/NYS Regents standards have caused movement towards this more conceptually based approach to biology education. DESCRIPTION:Join Kerry Kline as she models how she runs her regular journal clubs with her students. \n\n\n\nDeconstructed Journal Clubs \n\n\n\nDecember 7\, 2024 | 10am-1pm \n\n\n\nLed by Kerry Kline \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nDeconstructed Journal Clubs: a student-centered approach to decoding journal articles while also providing students opportunities to explore any topic of choice. This workshop will focus on articles that explore 1–how identity impacts who does science and how to use results to make changes within the classroom or school to be more inclusive\, and 2–how Indigenous land management impacts conservation outcomes. \nDeconstructed Journal Clubs are quite flexible! Depending on time\, students can come to class without prepping in any way before coming to class. Or\, if you prefer\, they can learn to lead their fellow students in a “club” with articles of your (or their) choosing. Students can practice a range of skills\, or a targeted subset\, all in service of building scientific literacy. By using regular\, dedicated time\, student confidence and ability to analyze data and figures noticeably improves. Depending on how you approach these clubs\, students can also practice making predictions (what do you think the experimental set up will be? How will researchers test their ideas?) and using data to solve problems. \nAudience: Middle School & Upper School Teachers of any science discipline. Articles used were developed for a biology class\, however\, the technique is valid for all science fields.

DESCRIPTION:What does inquiry look like in the classroom? What strategies can students use to self-assess? Pair consulting time with STEMteachersNYC. \n\n\n\nNov 23\, 9:30-11:30am ET\, via Zoom. \n\n\n\nLed by STEMteachersNYC Team. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nWhat does inquiry look like in the classroom? What does inquiry look like on paper? How do you know? What strategies can students use to self-assess? Once all pair project plans have had an initial review by NYAS\, STEMteachersNYC and colleagues\, in this workshop we will work with groups of pairs to review comments\, characterize the type of inquiry and level of active learning and engagement\, as well as support any revisions to project plans needed. Session may include assessment strategies for types of inquiry. \nAs part of our yearlong workshop series supporting classroom reserach projects\, this workshop aims to help you elevate student ownership of the research project design. Bring your students’ projects wherever they are\, or your lesson or unit plans to get started! \nNYAS Scientist in Residence Participants will be encouraged to bring their current project plans.

Would you like to engage your students in real\, student-driven independent research projects? Engaging high school and middle school students in the authentic research process stirs their curiosity and promotes creativity\, while introducing them to how science is done. \nIn this workshop\, we will model and share resources that teach students how to develop testable research questions\, design and execute their own rigorous experiments to answer those questions\, use statistics to analyze their results and present their data. Follow-up meetups will provide a space for reflecting on- and refining- your process of turning your science classroom into a research lab! In this workshop participants will put on their student-hats and dig into several phenomenon/experimental models and participants will learn to scaffold each aspect of the scientific process with mini-lessons. \nParticipants will be encouraged to bring student questions! \n \nJoin us in spring! In this 3-evening professional learning workshop we will look at strategies\, scaffolds\, and examples of teacher project plans and materials and templates that teachers have developed to translate scientific research into simplified\, student and classroom friendly materials and learning experiences. We will look at sample student work to explore how we can translate complex topics for audiences of diverse background knowledge\, to help students and others understand the significance of your research\, your process and your outcomes. \nDuring the workshop we will look at various rubrics and toolkits for translating research and projects into clear and captivating stories in various formats\, for a variety of student audiences. This program is free to participating teachers. \nBring the language of problem solving to your classroom! Use computational thinking and apply programming to real world scenarios and interdisciplinary examples from real world classrooms! Abstraction\, Logic\, Evaluation and more – the concepts and approaches of computational thinking can help students think through and tackle projects and problems\, and to work as a team and communicate solutions. Computation has become an integral part of every scientific field. Today’s scientists leverage computational tools\, use computation as a model for thinking\, conduct their investigations with computation and often must contribute to the design of the computational tools for their specific research. The NGSS emphasize the role of authentic professional practices in teaching science. DESCRIPTION:Develop your skills and learn ways to engage your students in a student-centered\, model-based approach to deepen understanding of physics!\n\n\nLeaders: Paul Feffer \nDates: July 8-12\, 2024 (9:00-3:00pm) in person at Trinity School \nFoundations in Student-Centered\, Models-Based Mechanics for High School Physics (HS) \n  \nAbout the Workshop: \nActive and pre-service physics teachers\, join us this summer to develop your skills and learn ways to engage your students in a student-centered\, model-based\, curricular approach that will deepen their understanding of core physics concepts. \nAs a participant\, you will observe instruction from a student perspective (“student mode”) as you conduct lab activities that are central to each unit and which are ready for your own classroom. Alternating between student- and teacher-mode\, we will discuss the pedagogical rationale behind each activity\, and strategies for adapting to various student populations and classroom resources. The materials and techniques in this workshop are all directly useful in the NYS Regents Physics Curriculum and in most other intro-level high school physics courses\, including the AP Physics 1 curriculum. The activities emphasize depth over breadth; as a result\, they cover many\, but not by any means all\, of the topics in the Regents Physics and most other intro curricula. \nThe workshop will focus on fundamental physics mechanics concepts including kinematics (constant velocity and uniform acceleration)\, dynamics (Newton’s Laws)\, circular motion\, and the conserved quantities momentum and energy. The models we will navigate are comprised of descriptive\, diagrammatic\, graphical\, and algebraic representations\, which are developed through observation\, experimentation\, and reflection\, and “deployed” through prediction and verification. The constructivist process we will explore encourages student teamwork and active\, productive discussion\, not just with the teacher\, but with fellow classmates. \nIf you are a pre-service physics teacher\, this workshop will help you prepare for your first year teaching an algebra-based intro physics course. SUMMARY:Sustainable Maker Cultures in the K-8 Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Learn to mitigate climate change through classroom-ready games! Learn to play Ekos\, Energetic\, and more! Everyone will take home a game!\n\n\nMany thanks to ConEd for ongoing support of our ClimateSTEM Series! \nOur students use a variety of multimedia to share/report data including Scratch\, movie presentations\, micro bits\, to create game boards or upcycling materials. Our students use data to compose arguments\, create infographics\, and tell stories. \n  \nThis workshop will focus on adopting the Circular Maker Space approach. In our talk\, we share our experience about not having our own dedicated Maker Space\, with limited budget. Some of our initial maker projects generated a lot of waste and eventually some of them ended up in the garbage. Keeping the Sustainable Development Goals in mind\, we look into how we can utilize maker spaces to reduce waste and build resilience. Some ideas include virtual maker space to teach engineering design and engaging students in meaningful projects that instills a sense of community responsibility. \n  \nCost: FREE. Hosted by the STEMteachersNYC Equity Lab. \n  \nMay 7\, 2024 | 6:00-7:00pm ET via Zoom \nAbout our guests for this event: \nLaura Ascenzi-Moreno Professor and Bilingual Program Coordinator in the Childhood\, Bilingual\, and Special Education Department at Brooklyn College. Ascenzi-Moreno is a bilingual literacy researcher and teacher educator who studies the literacy instruction of emergent bilinguals. Her work is focused on understanding the connection between ideologies and practice and in particular\, in examining how monolingual spaces within literacy instruction can be centered on emergent bilinguals’ multilingual practices. \nScott Grapin Assistant Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning. Broadly\, Dr. Grapin’s research centers on equity and justice for multilingual learners in K-12 education\, particularly in content classrooms. His current research focuses on curriculum\, teaching\, and assessment for multilingual learners and their peers in STEM content areas. Prior to pursuing his PhD\, Dr. Grapin was an ESL and Spanish teacher in the New Jersey public schools. \n  \nPast guest panelists include Prof. Lymaris Caraballo\, who shared her Cyphers for Justice College Now project and offered an introduction to Youth Participatory Action Research\, Dr. Okhee Lee who shared a brief history of MLL education policy and its evolution\, and Dr. Sheila Borges Rajguru\, who shared her current work at Rutgers and helped shape our reflections on working in representaion rich classrooms.

Use simulations to predict the duration of daytime at our latitude or the next!\n\n\nTwo-part professional learning workshop.  \nTitle: Modeling the Majestic Mathematics of Manhattanhenge \nDates: Two half days\, May 4 AND May 11\, 11:00am-2:00pm ET \nWorkshop leaders: Elissa Levy and Lawrence Whitier \n  \nYou probably learned in school that in the winter the weather is colder and the days are shorter because of the earth’s tilt. And you’ve probably heard of Manhattanhenge\, when the sunset aligns with Manhattan’s streets twice a year. But how are these phenomena connected? And how can our students model these phenomena in ways that deepen understanding and spark further questions? \nIn this two-session series\, we’ll build out a few GeoGebra simulations to model the motion of the sun-earth system\, which will enable us to predict the duration of daytime at our latitude or the next occurrence of Manhattanhenge. In the first session\, we’ll use multiple representations to explore how sunlight hits the earth\, aligning on terminology and geometric principles. In the second session\, we’ll construct 2-D GeoGebra models to make sense of the geometry\, and extend our GeoGebra models into three dimensions – as well as discussing classroom applications. This workshop does not require any prior GeoGebra experience and is open to all teachers. Energetic is used as part of climate courses at Carnegie Mellon\, Vanderbilt\, Bronx Science\, and Hunter College HS\, as well as at other universities and high schools. At this workshop we will hear from teachers that use the game\, and then we will try it ourselves! Can we keep the lights on in NYC in 2035? \nMatt S. – I used the game in my physics class as a potential end project for students to engage with. The physics ideas of gigawatts and the attributes of energy sources were embedded in the context of decision making. Teaching data literacy through storytelling can be a valuable tool in helping students interpret and communicate data effectively. This workshop blends and extends our Data literacy curriculum with our environmental units of the Hudson River and Eel and other projects\, and focuses on storytelling with the data. \nOur students use a variety of multimedia to share/report data including Scratch\, movie presentations\, MicroBits\, to create game boards or upcycling materials. Our students use data to compose arguments\, create infographics\, and tell stories. You can learn more about STEP UP here: https://engage.aps.org/stepup/home \n  \nIntroduction to Coding Physics Simulations for Teachers! with Paul Feffer \nIn this professional development workshop for teachers\, we will learn the basics of the JavaScript programming language within the p5.js environment with a focus on constructing physics simulations. Javascript is one of the most popular programming languages today which is used for web app development and desktop and mobile applications. p5.js is a JavaScript library of “tools” designed for creative coding with easy access to graphics and animation. These capabilities make p5.js ideal for physics teachers with little or no programming experience to start coding physics simulations! \nWhile three hours is hardly enough time for the briefest of introductions\, you will learn enough to get started and to find resources to continue your journey. As we cover some basic programming concepts\, you will code simulations for objects (1) moving at constant velocity\, (2) accelerating under the influence of a net force such as gravity\, allowing us to simulate projectile motion\, and (3) oscillating under a linear restoring force (a.k.a. a spring). DESCRIPTION:Strategies\, scaffolds\, and sample student work to explore how we help students communicate and tell the story of their research! \n\n\nScientific Communication – Telling the Story of Your Research! \nA Professional Learning Workshop for Solve for Tomorrow Teams \nMarch 2\, 2024 via Zoom (11:00am-2:00pm ET) \nLed by Eric Walters\, Tracy LaGrassa\, Allison Mayle and Jason Sullivan \n  \nHow do we convince others of the significance of our research? In this 3hr professional learning workshop we will look at strategies\, scaffolds\, and sample student work to explore how we have students write proposals and drafts\, and engage in peer review; how students generate a quad chart/mini-poster to report what they did and how and why they did it\, showing they understand not only their experiment\, but also the rationale behind their experiment and where it fits into the bigger picture. Content will be adapted to the needs and experience of participants.  \n  \nDuring the workshop we will look at various rubrics and toolkits for translating student research and projects into clear and captivating stories in various formats\, including oral presentations\, written scientific papers\, magazine-style writing\, expo tri-folds or posters\, podcasts\, and more.   \n  \nThere are many sciences\, many ways to communicate\, and many audiences to communicate to! With the understanding that participating teachers may also be at different points in their respective students’ research or project timelines\, and have different target communication products\, we will be inviting you to share a bit of detail about your project or research\, your target audience and ideal product\, in order to better tailor the workshop experience to your needs.  \nThis March 2 workshop is open to Samsung Solve for Tomorrow teachers. In this workshop\, participants will be introduced to the diagramming and systems modeling tool SageModeler\, a “free\, web-based\, and open-source software to engage students in systems thinking through designing\, building\, and revising models.” Workshop participants will have the opportunity to explore relevant phenomena such as energy flow in ecosystems\, factors contributing to wildfires or the health of a body of water in “student mode\,” beginning with basic diagramming skills and working towards creating a static equilibrium model. DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Teaching Systems & Resilience Thinking \n\n\n\nDec 2\, 9:00am-3:00pm (1 full day\, 6 CTLE); In-person at Trinity School \n\n\n\nLed by Don Hass (Paleontological Research Inst.\, NY) and Glen Stuart (STEMteachersNYC\, Montgomery HS). \n\n\n\nDescription: Amplify your teaching prowess and deepen your grasp of climate change\, scale\, and feedback loops with an immersive dive into the intricacies of this vital subject! \n\n\n\nOn Day 1\, explore climate change chemistry through interactive demonstrations and a thorough exploration of the Seuss effect. The key phenomenon we’ll explore is the story of a gallon of gasoline. When explored in just a little depth\, and at the scale of US consumption\, participants will be shocked – and be able to take the lesson directly to their classrooms. It will motivate you and your students to take action on climate. \n\n\n\nAfter our launch with a demonstration of ice melting in salt vs freshwater\, Day 2 will ask\, “How does one study a complex system consisting of multiple negative feedback loops of varying strengths\, and scales interconnected with multiple positive feedback loops of varying strengths\, scales\, and directions?” Computer simulations and conflicting contentions will spotlight feedback loops that shape our climate\, specifically albedo and convection as well as common misconceptions. \n\n\n\nBoth sessions will share extensive classroom resources. \n\n\n\nCost: (Limited # of tickets!) $45 per person to reserve your spot.
