DESCRIPTION:Strategies\, scaffolds\, and sample student work to explore how we help students communicate and tell the story of their research! \n\n\nScientific Communication – Telling the Story of Your Research! \nA Professional Learning Workshop for Solve for Tomorrow Teams \nMarch 2\, 2024 via Zoom (11:00am-2:00pm ET) \nLed by Eric Walters\, Tracy LaGrassa\, Allison Mayle and Jason Sullivan \n  \nHow do we convince others of the significance of our research? In this 3hr professional learning workshop we will look at strategies\, scaffolds\, and sample student work to explore how we have students write proposals and drafts\, and engage in peer review; how students generate a quad chart/mini-poster to report what they did and how and why they did it\, showing they understand not only their experiment\, but also the rationale behind their experiment and where it fits into the bigger picture. Content will be adapted to the needs and experience of participants.  \n  \nDuring the workshop we will look at various rubrics and toolkits for translating student research and projects into clear and captivating stories in various formats\, including oral presentations\, written scientific papers\, magazine-style writing\, expo tri-folds or posters\, podcasts\, and more.   \n  \nThere are many sciences\, many ways to communicate\, and many audiences to communicate to! With the understanding that participating teachers may also be at different points in their respective students’ research or project timelines\, and have different target communication products\, we will be inviting you to share a bit of detail about your project or research\, your target audience and ideal product\, in order to better tailor the workshop experience to your needs.  \nThis March 2 workshop is open to Samsung Solve for Tomorrow teachers. In this workshop\, participants will be introduced to the diagramming and systems modeling tool SageModeler\, a “free\, web-based\, and open-source software to engage students in systems thinking through designing\, building\, and revising models.” Workshop participants will have the opportunity to explore relevant phenomena such as energy flow in ecosystems\, factors contributing to wildfires or the health of a body of water in “student mode\,” beginning with basic diagramming skills and working towards creating a static equilibrium model. DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Teaching Systems & Resilience Thinking \n\n\n\nDec 2\, 9:00am-3:00pm (1 full day\, 6 CTLE); In-person at Trinity School \n\n\n\nLed by Don Hass (Paleontological Research Inst.\, NY) and Glen Stuart (STEMteachersNYC\, Montgomery HS). \n\n\n\nDescription: Amplify your teaching prowess and deepen your grasp of climate change\, scale\, and feedback loops with an immersive dive into the intricacies of this vital subject! \n\n\n\nOn Day 1\, explore climate change chemistry through interactive demonstrations and a thorough exploration of the Seuss effect. The key phenomenon we’ll explore is the story of a gallon of gasoline. When explored in just a little depth\, and at the scale of US consumption\, participants will be shocked – and be able to take the lesson directly to their classrooms. It will motivate you and your students to take action on climate. \n\n\n\nAfter our launch with a demonstration of ice melting in salt vs freshwater\, Day 2 will ask\, “How does one study a complex system consisting of multiple negative feedback loops of varying strengths\, and scales interconnected with multiple positive feedback loops of varying strengths\, scales\, and directions?” Computer simulations and conflicting contentions will spotlight feedback loops that shape our climate\, specifically albedo and convection as well as common misconceptions. \n\n\n\nBoth sessions will share extensive classroom resources. \n\n\n\nCost: (Limited # of tickets!) $45 per person to reserve your spot. Would you like to engage your students in real\, student-driven independent research projects? Engaging high school and middle school students in the authentic research process stirs their curiosity and promotes creativity\, while introducing them to how science is done. PART 1. In this workshop\, we will model and share resources that teach students how to develop testable research questions\, design and execute their own rigorous experiments to answer those questions\, use statistics to analyze their results and present their data. During the fall\, a variety of birds stop in Central Park to rest and refuel during their migration south\, while others make it their temporary home. Join us for a walk through the north end of the park to learn about some of the “snow birds” and winter residents—sparrows\, finches\, sapsuckers\, waterfowl\, blackbirds\, raptors—and search for late migrants and rarities such as warblers\, flycatchers\, shorebirds\, owls and more. Learn how to identify the birds and find out about their behavior. Bring walking footwear and binoculars and/or a camera with a good telephoto lens. DESCRIPTION:Empowering science teachers and learners through molecular modeling!\n\n\nUsing Molecular Modeling to Empower K-12 Science Teachers & Learners \nLed by Dr. Dan Fried\, Oct 21\, 2023 @DNA Learning Center\, 62 Tillary St\, Brooklyn \nEmpowering science teachers and learners through molecular modeling! \nIn this introductory workshop\, participants learn how molecular modeling can be used to easily enhance elementary and junior high chemistry and biology instruction. The goal of the workshop is to provide teachers with exciting age-appropriate activities and materials that can open the world of biochemistry to students of all ages. We will create models using a custom molecular modeling kit\, and a FREE 3D molecular modeling software to explore molecular bonding\, chemical reactions\, and larger molecules like enzymes\, DNA\, and RNA. The activities will enhance teacher confidence and outline new and unique ways to engage with your students. Instruction will be led by Dr. Daniel Fried\, a New Jersey based teacher and former chemistry professor. Workshop activities will draw from his Biochemistry Literacy for Kids program\, which has been implemented by dozens of schools\, and over 2000 home school families around the world. The activities emphasize depth over breadth; as a result\, they cover many\, but not by any means all\, of the topics in the Regents Physics and most other intro curricula. \nThe workshop will focus on fundamental physics mechanics concepts including kinematics (constant velocity and uniform acceleration)\, dynamics (Newton’s Laws)\, circular motion\, and the conserved quantities momentum and energy. The models we will navigate are comprised of descriptive\, diagrammatic\, graphical\, and algebraic representations\, which are developed through observation\, experimentation\, and reflection\, and “deployed” through prediction and verification. DESCRIPTION:During the Spring Migration\, a huge variety of birds stop in Central Park to rest and refuel for their journey North!\n\n\nLeaders: Peter Davenport and Fernand Brunschwig \nFormat and Dates: One 3.5 Hour Session\, 4/29/2023 (7:30-11:30am EDT – in person) \nWorkshops in our ClimateSTEM Series are made possible with support from ConEd. \nGroup Meets at 103rd Street & Central Park West \nDescription: Central Park is an urban oasis for birds as well as people. In spring\, Central Park becomes a global birding hot-spot. Thousands of colorful songbirds migrating from the tropics stop in the park each day in April\, May and early June to refuel on insects before continuing north toward their breeding grounds. Join us for a walk through the north end of the park to learn how to identify these birds—flycatchers\, warblers\, thrushes\, raptors and more—and search for rarities. Learn how to identify the birds and find out about their behavior. Bring walking footwear and binoculars and/or a camera with a good telephoto lens. Don’t be late—We will start walking at 7:45 am sharp. \nIncludes slides and other classroom-friendly resources! \n  \nCost:  $50 Stipends for first 8 teachers; free to all others (Limited # of tickets!) \nThe first eight teacher-participants to sign up will receive a stipend of $50 for this workshop!
