SUMMARY:Using Molecular Modeling to Empower K-12 Science Teachers and Learners
DESCRIPTION:Empowering science teachers and learners through molecular modeling!\n\n\nUsing Molecular Modeling to Empower K-12 Science Teachers & Learners \nLed by Dr. Dan Fried\, Oct 21\, 2023 @DNA Learning Center\, 62 Tillary St\, Brooklyn \nEmpowering science teachers and learners through molecular modeling! \nIn this introductory workshop\, participants learn how molecular modeling can be used to easily enhance elementary and junior high chemistry and biology instruction. The goal of the workshop is to provide teachers with exciting age-appropriate activities and materials that can open the world of biochemistry to students of all ages. We will create models using a custom molecular modeling kit\, and a FREE 3D molecular modeling software to explore molecular bonding\, chemical reactions\, and larger molecules like enzymes\, DNA\, and RNA. The activities will enhance teacher confidence and outline new and unique ways to engage with your students. Instruction will be led by Dr. Daniel Fried\, a New Jersey based teacher and former chemistry professor. Workshop activities will draw from his Biochemistry Literacy for Kids program\, which has been implemented by dozens of schools\, and over 2000 home school families around the world. As teachers experience ways to engage students in talking about scientific phenomena in a summer lab-school setting\, they gain confidence and expertise to bring new strategies into their regular classroom setting. Engaging high school and middle school students in the authentic research process stirs their curiosity and promotes creativity\, while introducing them to how science is done. \nIn this workshop\, we will model and share resources that teach students how to develop testable research questions\, design and execute their own rigorous experiments to answer those questions\, use statistics to analyze their results and present their data. Alternating between student- and teacher-mode\, we will discuss the pedagogical rationale behind each activity\, and strategies for adapting to various student populations and classroom resources. The materials and techniques in this workshop are all directly useful in the NYS Regents Physics Curriculum and in most other intro-level high school physics courses\, including the AP Physics 1 curriculum. The activities emphasize depth over breadth; as a result\, they cover many\, but not by any means all\, of the topics in the Regents Physics and most other intro curricula. \nThe workshop will focus on fundamental physics mechanics concepts including kinematics (constant velocity and uniform acceleration)\, dynamics (Newton’s Laws)\, circular motion\, and the conserved quantities momentum and energy. Thousands of colorful songbirds migrating from the tropics stop in the park each day in April\, May and early June to refuel on insects before continuing north toward their breeding grounds. Join us for a walk through the north end of the park to learn how to identify these birds—flycatchers\, warblers\, thrushes\, raptors and more—and search for rarities. Learn how to identify the birds and find out about their behavior. Bring walking footwear and binoculars and/or a camera with a good telephoto lens. In this interactive workshop\, we will share our cross-curricular Hudson River Estuary Unit with an emphasis on Climate Change and provide a framework to create your own local or climate change unit. DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we will learn the basics of the JavaScript within the p5.js environment with a focus on constructing physics simulations.\n\n\nIntroduction to Coding Physics Simulations for Teachers \nLeader: Paul Feffer \nDate: Saturday\, March 25\, 2023\, 9am-12pm EDT \nAbout the Workshop \nIn this professional development workshop for teachers\, we will learn the basics of the JavaScript programming language within the p5.js environment with a focus on constructing physics simulations. Javascript is one of the most popular programming languages today which is used for web app development and desktop and mobile applications. p5.js is a JavaScript library of “tools” designed for creative coding with easy access to graphics and animation. These capabilities make p5.js ideal for physics teachers with little or no programming experience to start coding physics simulations! \nWhile three hours is hardly enough time for the briefest of introductions\, you will learn enough to get started and to find resources to continue your journey. As we cover some basic programming concepts\, you will code simulations for objects (1) moving at constant velocity\, (2) accelerating under the influence of a net force such as gravity\, allowing us to simulate projectile motion\, and (3) oscillating under a linear restoring force (a.k.a. a spring). Making these connections is important for better integrating sustainability into our thinking about daily life activities. Workshop activities include: \n\nAn examination of the hidden ways people interact with even pristine environments\,\nA discussion of different environmental philosophers\,\nA deep dive into the link between evolutionary history and ecosystem function\,\nAn examination of the hidden environmental stories in everyday news\,\nAnd exploration of sustainability and the different ways daily life activities cause environmental issues through the disruption of regular ecosystem interactions.\n\nYael Wyner is Associate Professor of Teaching & Learning\, and Biology at the City College of New York. After completing her thesis research on the conservation genetics of lemurs\, Yael taught middle and high school for seven years. She developed the Ecology Disrupted model with National Science Foundation funding in collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History. DESCRIPTION:Leaders: Juliette Guarino Berg and Kathy Renfrew \n\n\n\nDates: February 25 and March 11\, 2023 (9:00am-12:00pm EDT\, via Zoom) \n\n\n\nAbout the Workshop \n\n\n\nNOTE – All participants will receive a materials kit in advance. \n\n\n\nPart 1: Capturing Student Interest with Phenomena \n\n\n\nWe will kick off the workshop having everyone engage in with a scientific phenomenon in student-mode. Participants will continue to work in student mode to generate noticings and wonderings as well as create models that attempt to explain what they have observed. Once participants have had the opportunity to share their models with each other\, they will develop questions about the models and determine whether those questions can be answered in the science classroom. Throughout the session\, relevant texts\, trade books\, and media will be introduced and discussed. \n\n\n\nAGENDA for Part 1 \n\n\n\n\nStudent Mode! Energy stick and tuning fork phenomena.\n\n\n\nNotice and Wonder. Draw a model – What do you think is happening?\n\n\n\nShare-out of thoughts and ideas.\n\n\n\nWhere have you seen things like this before? Whole Group Discussion and/or grade level groups.\n\n\n\nDeveloping and Asking Questions.\n\n\n\n\nPart 2: Using Texts and Other Media to Support Quality Science Instruction \n\n\n\nIn this session\, we take a dive into how science and literacy are dependent upon one another. In student mode\, participants will use the science and engineering practices in an investigation that could help to explain the observed phenomenon. After performing the investigation\, we will make a claim supported by evidence and reasoning\, as well as a second claim about how the investigation was important for understanding the phenomenon. Is this enough evidence? We will engage in discussions about how texts can be used to provide additional evidence to support our claim. Throughout the workshop\, participants will have opportunities to engage in many of the practices of scientists and engineers\, including reading\, writing\, speaking\, and listening. Many resources will be collected\, shared\, and discussed. \n\n\n\nAgenda for Part 2 \n\n\n\n\nExamining student mode questions from Part 1.\n\n\n\nInvestigation: Squishy Circuits (LEDs and Buzzers). Explain how squishy circuits demonstrates transfer of energy.\n\n\n\nWhat additional evidence do I need to support my claim? How can using text support literacy as well as using supporting science ?\n\n\n\nExpand meaning of text: photos\, maps\, diagrams\, infographic etc.\n\n\n\nAdditional for Lower Grade Band – Sound Travel Through Air\, Sound Travel Through Liquid\, Sound Travel Through Solids.\n\n\n\n\n4th grade Performance Expectations (4-PS3-2): Make observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place to place by sound\, light\, heat\, and electric currents. \n\n\n\nCrosscutting Concepts: Cause and Effect and Energy Transfer \n\n\n\nWe will also be addressing common core literacy writing\, speaking and listening and reading standards.

SUMMARY:Decarbonize New York City with the game of Energetic! (HS+)
DESCRIPTION:See the scope of change and cooperation needed to transform the city’s energy demand & supply in time to meet goals for the Paris Agreement.\n\n\nLeaders: Richard Reiss\, Rachel Wax\, Matthew Sarker \nDate/Time: February 11\, 10am-1pm\, In-person at Trinity School \nDescription: \nWe designed a board game about the future of New York City! Energetic is a cooperative team challenge in which you work to decarbonize New York City by building 16 GW of carbon neutral power by 2035. Each player is given the chance to see the scope of change and cooperation needed to transform the city’s energy demand and supply in time to meet goals for the Paris Agreement. Energetic is used as part of climate courses at Carnegie Mellon\, Vanderbilt\, Bronx Science\, and Hunter College HS\, as well as at other universities and high schools. At this workshop we will hear from teachers that use the game\, and then we will try it ourselves! Can we keep the lights on in NYC in 2035? \nMatt S. – I used the game in my physics class as a potential end project for students to engage with. The physics ideas of gigawatts and the attributes of energy sources were embedded in the context of decision making. The game itself is essentially a model\, and NGSS connections to the science practices standards related to the crosscutting concept of science and society are well aligned with the game. \nNGSS Science and Engineering Practices: \n\nDevelop and/or use a model (including mathematical and computational) to generate data to support explanations\, predict phenomena\, analyze systems\, and/or solve problems.\n\nNew York State: \n\nScience and Engineering Practices: HS-PS1-1: Use a model to predict the relationships between systems or between components of a system.\nEngineering Design: HS-ETS1-1: Analyze a major global challenge to specify qualitative and quantitative criteria and constraints for solutions that account for societal needs and wants.”\n\nGame sets will be available for play and to learn during the workshop.
