If you’ve encountered questions about workload\, reassessments\, grading policies\, equity\, or communication with students and families\, this workshop provides space to explore those challenges in depth. We’ll evaluate the impact of your current systems\, set goals for growth\, and revisit how standards-based approaches shape teaching\, learning\, and classroom culture. \nA central focus is learning from each other. Plan on sharing your systems and experiences. Together\, we will have a range of approaches to build on that meet different classroom and school needs\, and we will turn questions and challenges to the group for discussion and problem-solving. Through this collaborative work plus roleplay\, and “elevator speech” practice\, we’ll refine both our implementation and how we message this work to students\, families\, and colleagues. \nThroughout the workshop\, we will include dedicated time to align and refine your course materials—policies\, assessments\, and objectives—while also considering what is sustainable in day-to-day practice. With a balance of collaboration and work time\, you’ll leave with concrete revisions\, practical strategies\, and clear next steps to take your standards-based assessment and feedback system to the next level. \n  \nWorkshop Leaders\nSharona Kahn is the Mathematics Department Chair at the Berkeley Carroll School\, where she has taught and advised middle school students for the past eight years. With 16 years of experience in education\, she focuses on creating hands-on\, equitable learning experiences that help students develop deep mathematical understanding. Since joining STEMteachersNYC in 2017\, Sharona has both taken and led workshops\, with a particular passion for standards-based feedback and assessment. She is a recipient of the Siegel STEM Fellow Endowment. \nS.K. Smith “Smith” was raised by wolves in the ancient town of Joplin\, Missouri\, where\, at the ripe\, old age of twelve she ran off with a second-rate traveling circus.  Having learned the necessary skills of fire-breathing and hoop-jumping\, she now spends her time roaming about the country planting plastic flamingos where they are unwanted.  She can belt out a mean torch song in a pinch and–having taught in and around the great cities of Chicago\, St. Louis\, and New York–is most excited to work with this fantastic cadre of teachers excited about the wild and wooly world of feedback and assessment.  You can reach her to talk about truffles\, tarts\, and teaching at: ssmith@riverdale.edu. \nMark Schober teaches high school physics and astronomy at Trinity School in Manhattan\, and has led teacher workshops for the St. Louis Area Physics Teachers\, the American Modeling Teachers Association\, the American Association of Physics Teachers\, and STEMteachersNYC\, from Introduction to Modeling Instruction workshops\, to Make-n-Take workshops\, to rethinking assessment and feedback to improve student learning. How and what we assess fundamentally affects how we teach\, how our students learn\, and the relationships we build with them. By critically examining traditional grading practices—and the ways they can contribute to student inequalities—we’ll explore how shifting to a standards-based approach helps clarify what we want students to know and be able to do\, and how to communicate those objectives clearly. \nOver the course of the workshop\, you’ll be guided through the steps to set up your classes for standards-based grading\, with a focus on incremental\, manageable change. He previously taught Regents Chemistry and Biology for 3 years at Hyde Leadership Charter School and has worked with STEMteachersNYC to organize workshops and working groups on everything from biotechnology to AI in education. He’s passionate about mentoring the next generation of scientists from underrepresented communities. \nBrendan Harney is a science educator and department chair at the Bronx Lab School with 10 years of experience implementing project based curriculum across all science disciplines. He is always looking for ways to implement technology and new tools in his classroom\, and that has brought him into the STEMTeachersNYC AI Working group\, CIOB 25/26 AI Fellows\, and PlayLab 2025 Design Institute. DESCRIPTION:Help your students ask more questions in your science classroom – questions that promote a sense of wonder\, and a love for learning!\n\n\nKEY INFORMATION\n\nDate/Time: Sunday\, October 26\, 1pm – 3pm\nLocation: St. Francis College\, downtown Brooklyn\nWorkshop Leader: Peter Davenport (bio below)\nAppropriate for: Teachers of all age levels\, especially those employing project-based learning with their students.\n2hrs of CTLE credit offered\n\nWORKSHOP DESCRIPTION\nHave you ever wished students would ask more questions in your science classroom\, questions that promote a sense of wonder and foster the desire to learn more? Designed for early and mid-career teachers\, this workshop will explore how to use the Question Formulation Technique (QFT) to get all of your students involved in asking (and answering) phenomenon-based questions throughout your units. We will also discuss how the QFT works as a formative assessment and in fulfilling many indicators in the Danielson framework. \nTHIS WORKSHOP IS PART OF AN AUTUMN SERIES for teachers using project-based curriculum working up to student-driven investigations and year-end project showcases. All are especially relevant to NYAS Scientist in Resident participants\, but all are welcome to join. Prior to teaching\, he was a print journalist and editor\, and worked as an interpretive guide developing and leading outdoor programs at Walden Pond in Concord\, Mass.\, and with the Appalachian Mountain Club in New Hampshire. He holds an undergraduate degree in history and graduate degrees in teaching and environmental education. He spends free time bird-watching in New York City’s green spaces. \nABOUT STEMteachersNYC\nSince 2011\, STEMteachersNYC has delivered professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching.
