SUMMARY:Introduction to Coding Physics Simulations for Teachers (HS)
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, we will learn the basics of the JavaScript within the p5.js environment with a focus on constructing physics simulations.\n\n\nIntroduction to Coding Physics Simulations for Teachers \nLeader: Paul Feffer \nDate: Saturday\, March 25\, 2023\, 9am-12pm EDT \nAbout the Workshop \nIn this professional development workshop for teachers\, we will learn the basics of the JavaScript programming language within the p5.js environment with a focus on constructing physics simulations. Javascript is one of the most popular programming languages today which is used for web app development and desktop and mobile applications. p5.js is a JavaScript library of “tools” designed for creative coding with easy access to graphics and animation. These capabilities make p5.js ideal for physics teachers with little or no programming experience to start coding physics simulations! \nWhile three hours is hardly enough time for the briefest of introductions\, you will learn enough to get started and to find resources to continue your journey. As we cover some basic programming concepts\, you will code simulations for objects (1) moving at constant velocity\, (2) accelerating under the influence of a net force such as gravity\, allowing us to simulate projectile motion\, and (3) oscillating under a linear restoring force (a.k.a. a spring). As time permits\, we may also explore simulating orbital dynamics\, and how to use “leapfrog” integration to ensure a stable oscillatory motion that conserves energy. \n \n \nCost:  $25 (Limited # of tickets!) \nSTEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching\, since 2011. All workshops over 2hrs offer CTLE. CUNY Pre-service teachers may attend for free; Brooklyn College Pre-service teachers receive Field Site hours. Please reach out if your school requires an invoice. We are an NYCDOE MTAC Vendor. \n \nCurrent CUNY students with valid ID may attend workshops at a discount or for FREE! Please email preservice@stemteachersnyc.org for details. \nEmail general questions to Registration@STEMteachersNYC.org. Note this workshop requires a minimum number of participants. In the event there are not enough participants\, the workshop will be cancelled\, and a refund will be issued. \n \nInterested in an Invoice/Purchase Order Request? \nTeachers! Ask your school to pay for your ticket! All the school needs to do is send us a Purchase Order (PO). Fill out our PO/Invoice survey and we will prepare you an invoice for you to submit to your school/district. Or just copy and paste the information above and let them know the workshop you want to attend. Don’t be afraid to ask. There’s always a chance the money will be available and they’ll say yes\, but if you don’t ask\, there’s no chance at all. \nDistricts/Schools\, to request an invoice for a STEMteachersNYC Workshop\, please fill out a quick invoice survey. SUMMARY:Capturing Student Interest with Phenomena - 2 Part Workshop (ES)
DESCRIPTION:Leaders: Juliette Guarino Berg and Kathy Renfrew \n\n\n\nDates: February 25 and March 11\, 2023 (9:00am-12:00pm EDT\, via Zoom) \n\n\n\nAbout the Workshop \n\n\n\nNOTE – All participants will receive a materials kit in advance. \n\n\n\nPart 1: Capturing Student Interest with Phenomena \n\n\n\nWe will kick off the workshop having everyone engage in with a scientific phenomenon in student-mode. Participants will continue to work in student mode to generate noticings and wonderings as well as create models that attempt to explain what they have observed. Once participants have had the opportunity to share their models with each other\, they will develop questions about the models and determine whether those questions can be answered in the science classroom. Throughout the session\, relevant texts\, trade books\, and media will be introduced and discussed. \n\n\n\nAGENDA for Part 1 \n\n\n\n\nStudent Mode! Energy stick and tuning fork phenomena.\n\n\n\nNotice and Wonder. Draw a model – What do you think is happening?\n\n\n\nShare-out of thoughts and ideas.\n\n\n\nWhere have you seen things like this before? Whole Group Discussion and/or grade level groups.\n\n\n\nDeveloping and Asking Questions.\n\n\n\n\nPart 2: Using Texts and Other Media to Support Quality Science Instruction \n\n\n\nIn this session\, we take a dive into how science and literacy are dependent upon one another. In student mode\, participants will use the science and engineering practices in an investigation that could help to explain the observed phenomenon. After performing the investigation\, we will make a claim supported by evidence and reasoning\, as well as a second claim about how the investigation was important for understanding the phenomenon. Is this enough evidence? We will engage in discussions about how texts can be used to provide additional evidence to support our claim. Throughout the workshop\, participants will have opportunities to engage in many of the practices of scientists and engineers\, including reading\, writing\, speaking\, and listening. Many resources will be collected\, shared\, and discussed. \n\n\n\nAgenda for Part 2 \n\n\n\n\nExamining student mode questions from Part 1.\n\n\n\nInvestigation: Squishy Circuits (LEDs and Buzzers). Explain how squishy circuits demonstrates transfer of energy.\n\n\n\nWhat additional evidence do I need to support my claim? How can using text support literacy as well as using supporting science ?\n\n\n\nExpand meaning of text: photos\, maps\, diagrams\, infographic etc.\n\n\n\nAdditional for Lower Grade Band – Sound Travel Through Air\, Sound Travel Through Liquid\, Sound Travel Through Solids.\n\n\n\n\n4th grade Performance Expectations (4-PS3-2): Make observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place to place by sound\, light\, heat\, and electric currents. \n\n\n\nCrosscutting Concepts: Cause and Effect and Energy Transfer \n\n\n\nWe will also be addressing common core literacy writing\, speaking and listening and reading standards.

SUMMARY:Climate Models & Data Part 1 - Visualizing Climate Projections (HS)
DESCRIPTION:Help students build a better understanding of the connection between possible climate scenarios and global climate model outputs. \n\n\n\nLeaders: Eric Walters \n\n\n\nAs defined by NOAA\, a global climate model is a “complex mathematical representation of the major climate system components and their interactions.” Students often believe that climate change will impact all global locations equally. How do we help students build a better understanding of the connection between possible climate scenarios\, global climate model outputs\, and associated climate projections. In this workshop\, participants will explore the NOAA Climate Explorer and the US Climate Resilience Toolkit and will leave with a ready-made unit that helps students tell the story of climate change with data.

SUMMARY:Earth's Energy Budget Using My NASA Data Lessons (HS)
DESCRIPTION:Understand strengths and limitations of the conceptual model used to describe the complex energy transfer in the Earth systems. \n\n\n\nLeaders: Nathalie Macke \n\n\n\nClimateSTEM Series\, Focus on “Systems Thinking” . \n\n\n\nA new suite of My NASA Data lessons that address Earth’s energy budget have been developed by teacher interns for NASA this past summer. Participants will engage as model students in select lessons that have been developed to help understand the strengths and limitations of the conceptual model used to describe the complex energy transfer in the Earth system. After being provided time to briefly investigate and evaluate the lessons\, participants will consider how to best connect their students and communities with this complex topic\, and spend time developing a learning progression for their classroom’s specific educational objectives. Additional NASA products and tools will be introduced (as time allows) that may assist participants when identifying resources required to allow for students to connect phenomena to a complex model.

SUMMARY:Numbers\, Strategy\, and Computation with Mathic Games! (ES/MS)
DESCRIPTION:Reinforce math operations\, facts\, and concepts with Mathic Games! Developed by a teacher for the classroom! \n\n\n\nLeaders: Perry Clemons \n\n\n\nAbout the Workshop \n\n\n\nDEVELOPED BY A TEACHER for the CLASSROOM! Join us for a gamified workshop about Educational Math Card Games. In this workshop\, we will learn how to play the physical and virtual versions of Mathic Games. We will explore both ‘Mathic Number: The Card Game of Arithmetic’\, and ‘Mathic Fraction: The Card Game of Fractions’. Mathic Games are STEM.org Authenticated Educational Games that introduce and reinforce math operations\, facts\, and concepts. Mathic Games are very versatile math games where players compete to collect the most points by computing equations and earning tokens. These games can be used as resources to help students practice and master math\, as well as gain confidence in mathematics. Teachers can use Mathic Games with remedial and enrichment groups\, as well as during a test review. We’ll explore how the games can be used in your classrooms and in the homes of your students. There is no download necessary for this internet-based session. Learn more about Mathic Games @ www.mathicgames.com
