SUMMARY:Climate Models & Data Part 1 - Visualizing Climate Projections (HS)
DESCRIPTION:Help students build a better understanding of the connection between possible climate scenarios and global climate model outputs. \n\n\n\nLeaders: Eric Walters \n\n\n\nAs defined by NOAA\, a global climate model is a “complex mathematical representation of the major climate system components and their interactions.” Students often believe that climate change will impact all global locations equally. How do we help students build a better understanding of the connection between possible climate scenarios\, global climate model outputs\, and associated climate projections. In this workshop\, participants will explore the NOAA Climate Explorer and the US Climate Resilience Toolkit and will leave with a ready-made unit that helps students tell the story of climate change with data.

DESCRIPTION:Understand strengths and limitations of the conceptual model used to describe the complex energy transfer in the Earth systems. \n\n\n\nLeaders: Nathalie Macke \n\n\n\nClimateSTEM Series\, Focus on “Systems Thinking” . \n\n\n\nA new suite of My NASA Data lessons that address Earth’s energy budget have been developed by teacher interns for NASA this past summer. Participants will engage as model students in select lessons that have been developed to help understand the strengths and limitations of the conceptual model used to describe the complex energy transfer in the Earth system. After being provided time to briefly investigate and evaluate the lessons\, participants will consider how to best connect their students and communities with this complex topic\, and spend time developing a learning progression for their classroom’s specific educational objectives. Additional NASA products and tools will be introduced (as time allows) that may assist participants when identifying resources required to allow for students to connect phenomena to a complex model.

SUMMARY:How Our Food Moves Water Around the Planet (MS/HS)
DESCRIPTION:Learn about water use\, scarcity and drought\, in order to understand water the impacts on our local and global communities. \n\n\n\nLeaders: Robin Madel\, Kai Olson-Sawyer \n\n\n\nThis workshop educates teacher-participants about direct and virtual water use as well as water scarcity and drought\, in order to prepare to help students understand their own water use and the impacts it has on their local and global community. Our materials use the framework of water footprints\, which include the water it takes to make the foods we eat\, the things we buy and the services we use\, in addition to our direct water use from a tap. \n\n\n\nWe will share the tools\, lesson plans and informational resources from our website – watercalculator.org – about how we use water and how that use impacts the planet. It is critical for students (and others) to understand their own impacts before they face a water crisis\, and which can make understanding any necessary cuts in order to meet water conservation goals a much lighter lift. This is applicable in NYS and beyond\, because no place is immune to drought\, even a water-rich place like New York\, which is currently experiencing varying levels of drought.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a modeling-friendly workshop on a physics energy unit that is framed around climate change. \n\n\n\nLeaders: Elissa Levy \n\n\n\nJoin us for a modeling-friendly physics energy unit that is framed around climate change. We’ll apply energy bar charts to climate-related energy transfer and will explore the relationship between colloquial energy resources and canonical energy forms. After modeling global warming\, we’ll read and critique Eunice Foote’s original 1856 paper on carbon dioxide and heat. These activities have been done in 9th grade physics and can be adapted for any middle or high school classroom.

Developed by a teacher for the classroom! \n\n\n\nLeaders: Perry Clemons \n\n\n\nAbout the Workshop \n\n\n\nDEVELOPED BY A TEACHER for the CLASSROOM! Join us for a gamified workshop about Educational Math Card Games. In this workshop\, we will learn how to play the physical and virtual versions of Mathic Games. We will explore both ‘Mathic Number: The Card Game of Arithmetic’\, and ‘Mathic Fraction: The Card Game of Fractions’. Mathic Games are STEM.org Authenticated Educational Games that introduce and reinforce math operations\, facts\, and concepts. Mathic Games are very versatile math games where players compete to collect the most points by computing equations and earning tokens. These games can be used as resources to help students practice and master math\, as well as gain confidence in mathematics.
