SUMMARY:Standards-Based Assessment & Feedback (INTRO/ALL)
DESCRIPTION:All are welcome.\n\n\nTimes and Dates\nThis is 3-day introductory-level workshop running July 14 – 16\, from 9am – 3pm at St. Francis College. \nIf you are interested in the ADVANCED VERSION\, running on Thursday-Friday that same week\, please click here. \nAbout this Workshop\nLeaders: Sharona Kahn\, Smith\, and Mark SchoberCTLE: 18 hours \nFormerly titled\, Introduction to Assessment and Standards Based Grading\, this three-day workshop will guide you through the steps to set up your classes for standards-based grading. \nExpanded support for K-12 teachers of ALL disciplines from STEM to humanities. Bring all your colleagues with you! \n\nThe leaders worked… “as a great team to take a group of folks who were all over the place in their views on SBG to push ourselves to be better teachers.” “LOVED it! It was very well organized and seemed perfectly scaffolded for helping me as a newbie.” \n\nWhat do you want students to know and be able to do when they leave your course? How do you communicate these objectives to your students clearly? How do you design instruction and provide feedback that helps students to meet your goals? By critically examining how we assess student work\, we can improve instruction\, student attitudes towards learning\, and equity in grading. “Standards-Based Grading” provides students itemized feedback according to your course learning objectives. Students are then better able to know what they understand and what concepts need further practice and reassessment. In short\, SBG encourages a growth-mindset\, practice-until-you-succeed approach to learning. \nThe workshop guides you through an incremental adoption of SBG practices; shares sample learning standards\, assessments\, and gradebooks; and gives you structured time and feedback for tailoring these tools for your own classes. Throughout\, we will consider how to make an effective assessment strategy that is an integral part of a cyclical learning process. If at all possible\, attend with a colleague! \n  \nSTEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching\, since 2011. All workshops over 2hrs offer CTLE. CUNY Pre-service teachers may attend for free; Brooklyn College Pre-service teachers receive Field Site hours. Please reach out if your school requires an invoice. We are an NYCDOE MTAC Vendor. \nCurrent CUNY students with valid ID may attend summer workshops at a discount or for FREE! Please email preservice@stemteachersnyc.org for details. \nEmail general questions to Registration@STEMteachersNYC.org. Note this workshop requires a minimum number of participants. In the event there are not enough participants\, the workshop will be cancelled\, and a refund will be issued. \nInterested in an Invoice/Purchase Order Request? \nTeachers! Ask your school to pay for your ticket! All the school needs to do is send us a Purchase Order (PO). Fill out our PO/Invoice survey and we will prepare you an invoice for you to submit to your school/district. Or just copy and paste the information above and let them know the workshop you want to attend. Don’t be afraid to ask. There’s always a chance the money will be available and they’ll say yes\, but if you don’t ask\, there’s no chance at all. \nDistricts/Schools\, to request an invoice for a STEMteachersNYC Workshop\, please fill out a quick invoice survey. This is a required step in order to process your request. Any questions regarding the PO process please contact bookkeeper@stemteachersnyc.org \nPlease send Purchase Orders (POs) to our Billing Office \nVia Email: bookkeeper@stemteachersnyc.org \nOR Via US Mail: STEMteachersNYC – Billing Office 245 West 107th Street\, Suite 10B New York\, NY 10025. \nPlease read the FAQs section below carefully before registering. \nFAQs \nIs STEMteachersNYC an approved NYC DOE CTLE Vendor? \nYes. SUMMARY:Deconstructed Journal Clubs: Decoding Journal Articles w/Inquiry!
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand! Join Kerry Kline as she models how she runs her regular journal clubs with her students.\n\n\nDeconstructed Journal Clubs \nApril 5 \, 2025 | 10am-1pm \nLed by Kerry Kline \nDeconstructed Journal Clubs: a student-centered approach to decoding journal articles while also providing students opportunities to explore any topic of choice. This workshop will focus on articles that explore 1–how identity impacts who does science and how to use results to make changes within the classroom or school to be more inclusive\, and 2–how Indigenous land management impacts conservation outcomes. \nDeconstructed Journal Clubs are quite flexible! Depending on time\, students can come to class without prepping in any way before coming to class. Or\, if you prefer\, they can learn to lead their fellow students in a “club” with articles of your (or their) choosing. Students can practice a range of skills\, or a targeted subset\, all in service of building scientific literacy. By using regular\, dedicated time\, student confidence and ability to analyze data and figures noticeably improves. Depending on how you approach these clubs\, students can also practice making predictions (what do you think the experimental set up will be? How will researchers test their ideas?) and using data to solve problems. \nAudience: Middle School & Upper School Teachers of any science discipline. Articles used were developed for a biology class\, however\, the technique is valid for all science fields.

SUMMARY:Sustainable Maker Cultures in the K-8 Classroom
DESCRIPTION:Learn to mitigate climate change through classroom-ready games! Learn to play Ekos\, Energetic\, and more! Everyone will take home a game!\n\n\nMany thanks to ConEd for ongoing support of our ClimateSTEM Series! \nOur students use a variety of multimedia to share/report data including Scratch\, movie presentations\, micro bits\, to create game boards or upcycling materials. Our students use data to compose arguments\, create infographics\, and tell stories. \n  \nThis workshop will focus on adopting the Circular Maker Space approach. In our talk\, we share our experience about not having our own dedicated Maker Space\, with limited budget. Some of our initial maker projects generated a lot of waste and eventually some of them ended up in the garbage. Keeping the Sustainable Development Goals in mind\, we look into how we can utilize maker spaces to reduce waste and build resilience. Some ideas include virtual maker space to teach engineering design and engaging students in meaningful projects that instills a sense of community responsibility. \n  \nCost: FREE. Game sets will be raffled off to participants. You must attend to be in the running! SUMMARY:FREE Climate Game Day for Teachers! Ekos\, Energetic & More!
DESCRIPTION:Learn to mitigate climate change through classroom-ready games! Learn to play Ekos\, Energetic\, and more! Everyone will take home a game!\n\n\nMany thanks to ConEd for ongoing support of our ClimateSTEM Series! \nJoin us in-person April 13\, for a day of learning to play classroom friendly Climate Change simulation and solutioning games! We will be joined by some of the game creators\, and game sets will be raffled! \nYour own middle and/or high schooler children (not your students) are welcome to join us – please email yadana@stemteachersnyc.org to let us know! \n  \nEkos \nIt is the near future in the City of Ekos. The planet is rapidly urbanizing\, placing tremendous pressure on cities and urban areas to provide good living conditions for the majority of humanity…\nA group of community members must come together to design and build a network of resilient systems\, and envision a more equitable and sustainable Ekos in the face of climate change and other challenges. As one of six actors — a City Council Speaker\, City Planner\, Community Organizer\, Ecologist\, Designer\, and Modeler — it is your mission to use resources wisely\, collaborate with others and improve the adaptive capacity of your systems against extreme events like heat waves\, floods\, power outages and pandemics. \nTo win\, players must use systems thinking and explore concepts of resilience to collaborate\, problem solve\, and envision just urban futures. \nVisit https://www.ekosgame.com for more details. \n  \nEnergetic \nDecarbonize New York City with the game of Energetic! \nSee the scope of change and cooperation needed to transform the city’s energy demand & supply in time to meet goals for the Paris Agreement. \nWe designed a board game about the future of New York City! Energetic is a cooperative team challenge in which you work to decarbonize New York City by building 16 GW of carbon neutral power by 2035. Each player is given the chance to see the scope of change and cooperation needed to transform the city’s energy demand and supply in time to meet goals for the Paris Agreement. Energetic is used as part of climate courses at Carnegie Mellon\, Vanderbilt\, Bronx Science\, and Hunter College HS\, as well as at other universities and high schools. At this workshop we will hear from teachers that use the game\, and then we will try it ourselves! Can we keep the lights on in NYC in 2035? \nMatt S. – I used the game in my physics class as a potential end project for students to engage with. The physics ideas of gigawatts and the attributes of energy sources were embedded in the context of decision making. The game itself is essentially a model\, and NGSS connections to the science practices standards related to the crosscutting concept of science and society are well aligned with the game. \nNGSS Science and Engineering Practices: \n\nDevelop and/or use a model (including mathematical and computational) to generate data to support explanations\, predict phenomena\, analyze systems\, and/or solve problems.\n\nNew York State: \n\nScience and Engineering Practices: HS-PS1-1: Use a model to predict the relationships between systems or between components of a system.\nEngineering Design: HS-ETS1-1: Analyze a major global challenge to specify qualitative and quantitative criteria and constraints for solutions that account for societal needs and wants.”\n\nVisit Energetic to find out more and order your own set. \n  \nCost: FREE. Game sets will be raffled off to participants. You must attend to be in the running! SUMMARY:STEP UP Physics Together Regional Networking + Coding Physics Simulations!
DESCRIPTION:STEP UP: Physics Together coffee hour followed by a “Coding Physics Simulations” professional learning workshop! AND EQUIPMENT GIVEAWAY!\n\n\nNETWORKING + EQUIPMENT GIVEAWAY + CODING PHYSICS SIMS WORKSHOP! \n  \nSTEP UP: Physics Together will host a coffee hour (9-10am) before the physics workshop. All workshop participants are invited to join us for coffee\, juice and donuts. Learn more about STEP UP\, connect or reconnect with STEP UP Advocates and enjoy the company of other science teachers! \nSTEP UP is a national community of physics teachers\, researchers\, and professional societies. We design high school physics lessons to empower teachers\, create cultural change\, and inspire young women to pursue physics in college. STEP UP Advocates are teachers of physics working to inspire young women to pursue physics in their classrooms. There are approximately 60 STEP UP Advocates in the NYC region and STEP UP will open up applications for additional Advocates soon. Our Advocates are on the front lines of improving gender equity in physics! You can learn more about STEP UP here: https://engage.aps.org/stepup/home \n  \nIntroduction to Coding Physics Simulations for Teachers! with Paul Feffer \nIn this professional development workshop for teachers\, we will learn the basics of the JavaScript programming language within the p5.js environment with a focus on constructing physics simulations. Javascript is one of the most popular programming languages today which is used for web app development and desktop and mobile applications. p5.js is a JavaScript library of “tools” designed for creative coding with easy access to graphics and animation. These capabilities make p5.js ideal for physics teachers with little or no programming experience to start coding physics simulations! \nWhile three hours is hardly enough time for the briefest of introductions\, you will learn enough to get started and to find resources to continue your journey. As we cover some basic programming concepts\, you will code simulations for objects (1) moving at constant velocity\, (2) accelerating under the influence of a net force such as gravity\, allowing us to simulate projectile motion\, and (3) oscillating under a linear restoring force (a.k.a. a spring). As time permits\, we may also explore simulating orbital dynamics\, and how to use “leapfrog” integration to ensure a stable oscillatory motion that conserves energy. \n  \nCost: $25 (Limited # of tickets!) \nSTEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers\, by teachers\, about teaching\, since 2011.
