About this workshop
Calling all teachers who love birds! We invite you to join us for a morning walk in Manhattan's Central Park, an urban oasis for birds as well as people. Each fall, Central Park becomes a global birding hot spot! Thousands of colorful songbirds are migrating to the tropics. And many stop in the park each day in September and October to refuel on insects before continuing south toward their wintering grounds.
Take a leisurely walk with us through the north end of the park. While there is never a guarantee of what we will see, expectations include flycatchers, warblers, thrushes, raptors and more, and we will search for rarities amongst them. Learn about behaviors and how to use guides, apps, and your eyes and ears to identify the birds we'll see. Rain or shine the birds will be in the park, but if it's raining too much we will postpone. After an introduction to the Linnean Society and the route, and some classroom-friendly materials, we will start walking and watching. Don’t be late – we set out at 8:30am sharp!
If you would like to bring your own children, they are certainly welcome! They must be accompanied by you, and we ask that they be patient (there may be waiting) and excited but respectful of the quiet nature of birdwatching (so as not to scare away the birds). If you are bringing your kids, please include their name(s) and age(s) as you register.
We are excited to partner with the Linnean Society to put on a spring and fall walk each year for STEM teachers. Peter, who’s full bio is below, is a board member and currently President of the society, which exists to “fosters an appreciation of the natural world with a special emphasis on birds.” Learn more about their lectures, field trips, membership, and more during the day.
When preparing for the day, please note that this is a fully outdoor event.
Paths are fully accessible, but may be uneven at times.
The park has accessible bathrooms which we will pass along the way.
Please dress appropriately with walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen or rain gear if needed.
Bring water/caffeine and a snack as needed.
Bring binoculars/monocular, and if you have a camera with a good zoom lens, this is the time to put it into action!
And please do NOT bring your dog (unless it is a certified service animal), as they have a tendency to scare birds.
