Workshop description

About this workshop

Help students build clear, evidence-based arguments and explanations with the Claims, Evidence, Reasoning (CER) framework. In this three-hour virtual workshop, Glen Stuart will guide teachers through phenomenon-based examples that can be adapted for any grade.

Start in student mode to experience the activities, then shift into teacher mode to unpack the strategies and discuss how they connect to your classroom. Examples include an Environmental Science case study and an adaptable project on ecological resilience.

You will work toward defining CER and designing classroom experiences, identifying and addressing common student misconceptions, and adapting these strategies for inquiry, research, phenomenon-based learning, or project-based learning.

This workshop is for teachers of any grade. Join us on Zoom on Saturday, December 5, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM Eastern. Three CTLE hours are available.

Workshop leader Glen Stuart teaches Environmental Science and Biology at Montgomery High School in New Jersey and has participated in and facilitated STEMteachersNYC workshops for 11 years. He holds an M.A. from Rider University and a B.S. from Rutgers.
