Leaders: Zhanna Glazenburg and Seth Guinals-Kupperman
Participants will explore a variety of experimental situations in various contexts, (biology, chemistry, physics, physical science, . . . ) collect data, plot graphs to analyze the data, and develop an equation for representing the pattern in the data. Participants will use the graphical and mathematical representations to make predictions about the original phenomena and share their findings on large whiteboards to facilitate discussion. This workshop will involve an intensive, “immersion” in which teachers experience the activities just as their students would. This “Experiments First!” approach explicitly addresses the Next Generation Science Standards, is eminently “classroom-ready”, and easily adaptable to a variety of teaching styles. As a practical exercise, teachers will select one of their own upcoming lessons and collaborate with colleagues to incorporate an “Experiments First!” approach.
