A Diverse Community of STEM Teachers
STEMteachersNYC is a diverse community of teachers and educators from across the country who are dedicated to cultivating excellence in STEM teaching and promoting deep understanding and success for students through innovative, teacher-led professional development. Meet some of our amazing teacher leaders below:
Meet Kelly Davison
Science Teacher, Mott Hall Academy of Science and Technology
A self proclaimed curriculum nerd, she brings attention to the pedagogical and content details and context in equal measure. This summer Kelly is bringing back her Unit Planning and Curriculum Design with NGSS workshop – with the product being as important as the process, participants will work on and leave the course with plans and strategies adapted for their own classrooms.
Meet Paul Feffer
Physics Teacher, Storm King School
This summer Paul Feffer leads a multi-grade workshop exploring ways to bring the engineering design process, not only into your virtual curriculum, but also the home! Thoughtful, scaffolded, hands-on lessons for anywhere! Here he shares insight into the process of developing the workshop and what you can expect when participating.
Meet Juliette Guarino Berg
Science Teacher, The Chapin School
STEMteachersNYC Board member, 4th grade science teacher at Chapin, robotics coach, with an interest in sustainability, Juliette co-established the Elementary STEM Initiative. The goals of the Initiative are to develop and offer workshops that more broadly reach and address the needs of elementary science and STEM teachers. This work has grown into Seeing Science Everywhere, now one of our core summer programs!
Meet Elissa Levy
Science Teacher, Life Sciences Secondary School
Elissa is a high school physics teacher, with interests wide and deep, from matching learning to cultural responsiveness. This summer she and the members of our Culturally Responsive Teaching in STEM task force have developed a four module around dimensions of responsive teaching. Here she shares some detail on each, and how the team is integrating equity in the age virtual classrooms.
Meet Chris Resch
Biology Teacher, Montgomery High School
Always inspiring as a teacher and tireless in his contributions to the organization and his own community, Chris is a high school biology and iSTEM teacher, and the cofounder of the Consilience Coalition. This spring Chris has simultaneously taught, 3D printed hundreds of masks for healthcare workers all over the country, and led a workshop on DIY Hydroponics. This summer he will co-facilitate Growing Your Modeling Practice – Together! With colleague Joan Fei.
Meet Mark Schober
Physics Teacher, Trinity School
Standards Based Grading is an important step toward increasing clarity, intentionality and structure to student learning. Over several years Mark Schober has carefully developed an approach to unpacking and simplifying the transition to SBG. This year Mark teams up again with Manjula Nair for both an Introduction to SBG and an Advanced level workshop.
Meet Kate Macauley
Science Teacher, Hunter College Elementary School
Elementary Science Specialist at Hunter College Elementary, Kate and the Elementary STEM Initiative team are expanding on their work from Seeing Science Everywhere, bringing in a new element – computational thinking! Join us for a deep dive introduction to the NGSS 3Ds and coding, for the blended learning and virtual teaching spaces.
Meet Seth Guinals-Kupperman
Physics Teacher, Brooklyn Latin School
Seth was one of the founding members – instigators – of STEMteachersNYC. Bringing together fellow high school physics teachers to create a supportive network around peer generated growth, he continues to support colleagues through his work as a workshop leader and as a board member. Here he reflects on the meaning of STEMteachersNYC and the work that we do.
Meet Glen Stuart
Biology and Environmental Science Teacher, Montgomery High School
As high school environmental science teacher at Montgomery HS, Glen intentionally challenges students and colleagues to push ideas and build new thoughtful connections. This spring he launched our Consilience Reading Club, sharing the readings he uses with his students, that merge environmental science and humanities. Here Glen shares his thinking and process around teaching and leading workshops.
