How do we convince others of the significance of our research? How can we communicate true-to-life research in a form that is easy to grasp by those not in our field? How can we offer models that are applicable to teachers and their students in their classrooms? In this 3-evening professional learning workshop we will look at strategies, scaffolds, and examples of teacher project plans and materials and templates that teachers have developed to translate scientific research into simplified, student and classroom friendly materials and learning experiences. We will look at sample student work to explore how we can translate complex topics for audiences of diverse background knowledge, to help students and others understand the significance of your research, your process and your outcomes.

During the workshop we will look at various rubrics and toolkits for translating research and projects into clear and captivating stories in various formats, for a variety of student audiences. We will unpack examples of student proposals and drafts – in order to better align how we approach translating materials that share the rationale behind your work and where it fits into the bigger picture of daily life.

In this workshop series, we will also dig into the multiple types of classroom inquiry, how they overlap with your own processes, and spend time translating some of what you do into classroom models of inquiry.

There are many sciences, many ways to communicate, and many audiences to communicate to! With the understanding that participating researchers may also be at different points in their respective research or project timelines, and have different target communication products, we will be inviting you to share a bit of detail about your project or research in advance, your target audience and ideal product, in order to better tailor the workshop experience to your needs.

STEMteachersNYC delivers professional development workshops for teachers, by teachers, about teaching, since 2011. All workshops over 2hrs offer CTLE. CUNY Pre-service teachers may attend for free. Please reach out if your school requires an invoice. We are an NYCDOE MTAC Vendor.

There’s always a chance the money will be available and they’ll say yes, but if you don’t ask, there’s no chance at all.

If you register, you are agreeing to be photographed and to have your voice and image video-recorded. You are also agreeing to relinquish all your rights to the photographs and video recordings.

If you do not wish to be photographed or video-recorded – you must inform us before the workshop starts. For in-person workshops, we will take one photograph of your face so that we can erase your image if we happen to catch it by chance during the workshop, and we will do our best to avoid you. We would also appreciate your cooperation in positioning yourself at the edge of the group so as to help us avoid you.
