In this 2 hour virtual workshop you will learn how responsive teaching can leverage the Claims Evidence Reasoning (CER) framework in the Environmental Science classroom to make student thinking visible. When combined, these strategies exceed the sum of their parts to increase student learning and outcomes. This workshop will ask you to engage in environmental science-specific activities in student mode, where you will experience what these strategies look like, sound like, and feel like. Then, you will shift into teacher mode to unpack these ideas as they relate to our classrooms. By the end of the workshop participants will be able to define CER as well as ecological resilience, identify and counter common student misconceptions about both ideas, and earn the confidence to implement these strategies in your classroom.
